I posted this in another section, but figured I'd get a lot more advice in GD. I would like to make this my weekend project.
I'm running out of space in my safe, and as a cost effective solution I was thinking of putting my Mosins, etc on a gun rack in the room. I saw a magnetic fake wood one by Sportsman's Guide I think... Something similar to that. Any suggestions? $200 on the high end (something real nice) but $60-$100 is the sweet spot. I'm open to building one, as well as purchasing one. |

Dammit, I came to post this... |

But Wayne doesn't own A gun, I own many guns which necessitate the use of an entire rack |

Do you have some space in your book shelves?I had a couple of custom rifle rack inserts made to replace the bookshelves. http://m9.i.pbase.com/g1/72/325172/2/126446679.zmxv0f6A.jpg http://m3.i.pbase.com/g1/72/325172/2/131785723.l4NWclky.jpg http://m4.i.pbase.com/g1/72/325172/2/131785714.0hCgsv1r.jpg This is awesome and definitely in the running. |

OP build one your self. This is what i use, my father in law and his dad built it back around 55 years ago when he was a kid in NY. it may not look that great but to me it means a lot. When he gave it to me he tried to play it off that it was going in the trash if i didn't take it but i could tell he remembered building it with his dad and no way would he trash it. i will never part with it. http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i21/mangyrat/IMG_20150911_225821874_zpsoitstcug.jpg http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i21/mangyrat/IMG_20150911_225805627%201_zpsbxj908ij.jpg Sold. I will build my own, too many great ideas. Appreciate the push in that direction. |
Wood Magazine had plans for a nice one a few years ago. If you don't have the magazine, you can buy them on-line.

Something like the brown bess is the sort of firearm I see hanging over a mantle by itself. It is a display all on its own. Even if you are building something now, and that is what I recomend, look at what is out there. Look how they hold the glass and some use mirrors to help with lighting or to make it look like the row of guns just goes on and on, that would be a mirror on the side and not really seen from the front so much. But at an angle it was interesting and different and I guess the fella had some old mirrors he wanted to use up. Run searches on hidden gun compartments and gun storage and what not, lots of cool ideas for how to secure thing or build a hidden compartment or something. I have some old weathered wood for a few things, not that weathered but it is nice wood compared to some of what is out there at the home depot or lowes box stores. Read up on woodworking sites and you can probably find a free cabinet building book on the net if you look around, if not find a used book store and buy one for a few bucks. I really like the coffee table/crates of rifles but I use a foot locker for my coffee table and it is full of odds and ends. Kind of a junk box for gun stuff, stacks of this and that. In just this thread you will see the idea where the rifle has a decent place to sit where the rifle butt fits down into the wood a little so it can't slide out and the curved holders that hold the barrel of the rifle. This means a decent bump or something won't make the rifle slide around or anything. And really some folks have some good threads on this site of stuff they built, and of course some of those threads will cover what not to do. If I ran into an old gun display case I would grab it just because the new ones are junky looking in my price range. But I would probably add a few things to make it do what I want it to do. |
