She is 4. I think this is one of the 17 year versions (Brood IV)

It is not one of the typical annual types.

By the way, it's a Tibicen Dorsatus Cicada.  I used to see them frequently when I lived in IL.  We don't get them in FL.

I have been getting those in my yard.  At first, I thought that they were sphinx moths, since I have only seen one other cicada killer in NE Ohio.  However, I finally caught one landing, and realized what it was.  That is good, because I hate cicadas damaging my fruit trees.

As for the the question posed in the thread's title, I have found that .22 short works just fine for cicadas.  The resultant explosion is spectacular.  I wish I had a high-speed camera to record it.
