I noticed yesterday morning that the coffee I'd made had no flavor.  I thought I'd done something wrong, not awake yet when I made it.  I followed the usual routine, six cups of water in the Mr. Coffee, two scoops of Folgers French Roast in the basket.  It ran normally, but the coffee had zero flavor.  I did it again this morning, with the same results.  The coffeemaker seemed to work normally.  Your thoughts on what might have changed?

Please, no gourmet pontificating, no Kuerig snobs, blah blah blah.  This is everyday coffee from an everyday machine, which has always worked fine for me until yesterday.

No, it's the same can I've been using lately, maybe half full or so.  One day it was fine, the next day nada flavor.

... Was the coffee as hot as normal?

Seemed to be.  It's a standard Mr. Coffee, 12 cup programmable.  I made sure the basket and filter (I use the gold wire filter basket) were clean.  I ran a pot of water through it, seemed to work fine, the water was steaming hot when it had finished the cycle.  Hmm, don't have a thermometer to really know.

The machine is a couple of years old, never given me a problem until now.  May be time for a new one.

Ever clean it?

Run a full pot of cheap vinegar thru it, then a couple cycles of clean water.

I'm on well water and have to do this every 6 months or so, lots of scale and crap gets flushed.

How's everything else tasting?

Maybe it's not your coffee at all......

Have you ever cleaned it with vinegar?

Every few months I fill the reservoir with vinegar, put in the basket and pot, then turn the coffee maker on.

After all the vinegar is in the pot, I let it cool and pour it back in the reservoir to sit overnight.

In the morning I dump the vinegar and run a pot of water through it before I make coffee.

This removes accumulated minerals and the coffee tastes a lot better when the coffee maker is clean.

ETA usjet is not only right but types faster than I do.

Use more coffee grounds.
1 scoop for every 2 cups plus 1 more scoop makes a great cup of coffee.

French Press. So easy you almost can't fuck it up and it is deeeeelish. That is what I make every morning. I look forward to it before I've even got one foot out of the bed.

This is not helpful.  Yeah, I have a French press, and I used it this morning when the Mr. Coffee failed.  I am trying to troubleshoot the coffeemaker, not go a different route.

Sorry  I just love my press and love to extol it's virtues. Best wishes for your sad Mr. Coffee.

Your heating element might be going. The water may not be hot enough to extract the oils which provide the flavor. I belive the optimal temp is 204 degrees F.  It may feel hot but I'll bet that it's 170 or below. At those temps you'll get warm, brown water.

And yes....Mr Coffee sucks.

Techni vorm FTW. If you really like coffee, and I do, then a Mocamaster is probably the best machine out there.  I'm having my first cup of the day right now out of one that I've owned for about 6 years and it's spectacular. Good beans and a burr grinder are also essential.

I may never own a G650 but I'll drink the finest coffee, smoke the finest cigars and sip the best single malt known to man....maybe in that order!

This, sounds more like you changed, not the coffee maker.

Go to Dunkin Donuts and get a cup of coffee, see what it tastes like.

How long does it take the pot to fill? IIRC, there's a thermally operated flow control valve in the bottom of the reservoir and it may be opening too quickly (water not hot enough) or too much (water flowing through too fast).

The thought had crossed my mind.

I have flushed the coffeemaker with vinegar, now on the second potful of water to rinse it out.  I did check with an analog meat thermometer, it did indicate ~165 degrees when a full pot had just finished.  I will check again with a digital thermometer when the second pot finishes.  I suspect that the temperature is too low...  the water is steaming hot as it comes out of the top spout, though.

Okay, second pot measures 171 degrees with the digital thermometer, temp taken as soon as the cycle finished.  I am making another pot with the usual amounts of water and coffee.  We'll see if it is any better.

ETA:  The pot tastes the same, weak in other words.  I suspect it's the heat, or the valve as mentioned above.  Time for a new coffeemaker, I guess.
