When I was younger I used to play tenor sax.  However, my kid seems fascinated with trumpets.  Now he's only 4 so I'm not looking to groom him for the philharmonic.

But I'm curious, what's the difference between the $129 cheapie at walmart and the $2000+ models?  What about the $100 used ones on craigslist?

I know for a 4 year old it'd be an achievement just to get a tune out of it but should he enjoy it and grow to play it in elementary school, I'd like him to have something usable.

Thanks

Same as anything else. Quality of construction, quality of materials, fit and finish, warranty and customer service, etc.

eta: a $100 Craigslist trumpet would be a perfect starter instrument for elementary school band, because that's almost certainly what it was manufactured to be.

Been teaching high school, middle school and college band for nearly 30 years here:

Junk horns give junk results.

They won't play in tune, the valves will hang up, the solder joints will break.

In short, the quickest way to ensure that your kid won't continue on the instrument is to get some junker from Wally World.

The best value out there in new horns are the Jupiter XOs.  It kills me to say that, but they are making some seriously good horns.

If you aren't into ponying up for a new horn, look for any used horn from Yamaha that appears to be in good condition and is within your price range.

Problem solved.

Bach Stradivarius, creme de la creme.

Holton and Yamaha for learning and budget.  Bach is when you want to go varsity from the jv.

Bach bores the brass tubes out, custom thicknesses depending on how much air volume you want.  When you buy one, sit in the store and try as many as you can before buying.

Don't forget your multiple mouthpieces.

I used to play a bach stradivarius trumpet. I haven't played in years.
I've been meaning to dig it out one weekend.
Learn on a good horn. Check local ads and craigslist but end of the school year probably would yield better selections and pricing
