How do you tell an Angus from a Maine Anjou?

Most Maine's are red and white anyway.  The black Maine's will have small white spots on their bellies.

Angus, of course, are nearly always solid black.

Colonel Angus would probably have the answer to this question.

Angus can be anything that's mostly black any more.  Nothing but hype now .

I have a black bull.  He's not an angus, but a registered Gelbvieh.

Angus or Red Angus?  Red is a recessive gene trait.

Angus will have a solid coat color(black or red) w/ maybe a speck or two of white on the sheath or udder(I'm not sure what the registry books allow).  You used to be able to tell by type.  Angus were smaller framed and compact while Semintal, Maines, etc were larger framed and had more muscular hindquarters.  Now they have bred some of the Angus up in size and muscling, and bred the other breeds to be more compact and black.  Short answer, check the papers.

Ask him if he is pro 2nd ammendment.

If he says "Ayuh", He's a Mainer.

Really quite simple.

I can't believe I am wasting my time answering such a junior cattle question.

Good lookin bull. I also have a registered Gelbvieh bull and black Simmental cows. Black calves bring the best price, but none of mine are angus.

I recall showing a Maine x Simmental x Angus cross steer once. Damn good steer, but crazier n' hell. Had to hit him with a little "tranquilizer" before going in the show ring.

I hated that bastard (he freight trained me twice) and would have loved to have pulled trigger at butchering time on him.

Insert finger into the rectum of the bovine in question.

Place finger under nose and inhale deeply.

Report back here and let us know what it smells like.

We will confirm breed at that time.

When they are all bLack breeds the buyers will start docking the blacks in price.  We have gotten good $$ for our red angus the last few years

Yup, to get the certified angus stamp the beef must meet certain requirements...and come from a steer/heifer that has a black hide (or from an animal that is 1/2 angus by parentage regardless of color)

The real way you tell if the cattle are breed X or breed Y is to check the registration.

Yup, and an anjous that is 51% black can produce certified angus beef.

This is Anarchy, our Maine-Anjou/Angus cross bull.  He has fathered a few nice show calves.

He's also a big puppy dog.

ETA , if you're into show cattle, he's a Monopoly son.

I've found puppy to be a bit stringy.

Nice looking $$ maker.  Our daughter just picked up another angus. Now she's dealing with coyotes and larger predators. The CA fires and drought have pushed them down where the normally don't wander.

Man that is a very nice bull.

I take it show cattle can be hybrids?

As long as you're not showing in breed.  Most Club Calves are crossbreeds.  Anarchy is a Maintainer (>25% Maine-Anjou). If you bred him to a Maine or Maine cross, the calf could be shown as a Maintainer.

Lol...

These breed questions amuse me.  There is as much variation within breeds as there is amongst breeds.  Breed has nothing to do with superiority or quality.  Genetics does.  Marketing tells people which breed they should think is best.
