He got going WAY faster than I expected.  IF the car staying in once piece, and the parachutes deployed at the correct time, he may have been damn close.

Looks like the parachutes went off way too soon. It didn't start falling apart until that sudden stop.   If he'd have coasted for another couple seconds, he might have made it.

It was 1976.  That film was probably considered high definition at the time. Also, he was probably holding his own beer as he attempted the jump.
