Would not the 9mm Luger or 40SW be better choices for home defense? Now that we all have spent a fortune on 5.56 guns? What say you? Thanks...

Not really. 9mm actually over penitrates more than 5.56. I read somewhere that the navy Seals switched to the Mk18 Mod0 vs. the MP5 because 5.56 ricochets less in a ship than 9mm, in other words safer.

This info is readily available (on this site no less) with a little bit of searching.

Rifle> Pistol in just about every way possible when it comes to terminal ballistics.

Don't get me wrong, the 9mm is my favorite AR, but it's not what I'd be grabbing in the middle of the night...

in addition to the penetration issue, the blowback 9mm carbines have much more movement due to the heavy bolt moving

Rifle>>>pistol

As for penetration

Pistol>rifle

You carry a 9 or .40 because it is small and convenient

Just fire off two shotgun blasts from your double barrel off the porch.

But seriously, stick to quality 5.56.

What do YOU prefer? A pistol will be just fine. Carry a high quality SD round (HST, Ranger-T, Gold dot) and train appropriately. Practice shot placement and build muscle memory. There's a lot more to defending yourself than worrying about the size of a bullet.

The thing you'll have to remember is that there are no guarantees. An attacker could be high on something and feel no pain, doesn't matter how big the round is, they are coming at you. In which case, what's more important a couple large rounds or more capacity with smaller rounds? A rifle with higher velocity and small rounds which many times just pass through?

What happens if the attacker pulls a gun? A knife? a pipe? Too many variables to base a decision off round size.

On the other hand you could have someone who turns and runs at the simple sight of the gun, and if that's the case, it doesn't matter what round you choose.

Another thing to consider is, are you the only one that might have to use the gun/rifle? Do you have a smaller wife who has trouble controlling more recoil from 40 or 45? Or be able to move through the house with a full size rifle?

There's a LOT of possibilities when preparing for home and self defense.

.40 doesn't do anything that 9mm doesn't except reduce mag capacity and cost a bit more.

It has been more available than 9mm when there's an amp shortage.
