I have seen them in News reports and pictures. What is the piece of equiptment mounted just behind the front sight. IS it a range finder a laser disignator or what? Maybe bug repellant?

paq-4 infrared targeting device. IR light shows up on night vision. It is basically an IR lasersight that makes an extremely bright dot for you to place upon victims skull moments before vaporizing it.

Edited to say: it is extremely annoying when used in large quantities close together...

NVGs don't adjust focus to allow you to see near and far objects. When flying on NVGs, we set the focus to infinity and look underneath the goggles to read instruments. Same principle applies to using your rifle's sights while wearing NVGs.
