I got to wondering today what the First and Second Reich were.
I knew Hitler declared his reign the Third Reich I found this explanation: ----------------------- The Third Reich, the regime in Germany from 1933 to 1945, was named as the presumed successor of the Holy Roman Empire of 800 to 1806 (the First Reich) and the German Empire of 1871 to 1918 (the Second Reich). ----------------------- |

First Reich would be the Holy Roman Empire Second Reich would be the reign of the Hapsburg to the abdication of Kaiser Wilhelm in 1918. This is the way I understood it as well. Nope. Hapsburgs, while having their fingers all over Europe, were pretty much an Austrian Dynasty by the time of the German Empire (1871-1918). The German Empire was ruled by a Prussian dynastic family the Hozenhollerns, not by the Hapsburgs, and it is this empire that is commonly referred to as the Second Reich. |
