The scene with the nuke going off as a season ending cliffhanger was a bit of the joke. The ratings weren't all that great and the figured that they were going to be cancelled. So they decided to make the final scene as one last joke.
The trouble was that a network executive's wife was a big fan of the show and convinced him to give it one more season. So they ordered another year, And that is how we Got Sledgehammer: The Early Years. Except that he had the same female rookie partner characters etc. Loved the show. |

A very favorite of mine since day 1. I have all the eps on VHS buried away somewhere. I keep meaning to dig them out and xfer them to DVD, but haven't done it yet.... did they ever release them on DVD??? Yes they did. If you get them, DO NOT listen to the commentaries or watch the making of features. That's where you find out the creators of show are raging libs. |

epic show. Loved the scene where he's in a building full of crazy cultists and he has to go to the roof to signal a chopper with a flare gun. Naturally, he turns the chopper into a fireball... ![]() State of Sledge, I think it was. My 2nd favorite episode, after the pilot. "It's Hammer time!" |

That was the best flare gun shot in the history of TV/movies. Bruce Willis' car-destroying shot in Striking Distance is a close second... |

The only scene I remember with clarity is when he rents a VHS tape and when he plays it it is a human target saying "shoot me"... and he does... and quips "well, I guess you can only rent this one once."
And didn't they destroy the whole city at the end of season 1? A prime example of a show that knows it isn't getting renewed... only to get renewed.

But I still laugh at Archie Bunker. |
