Have an Aluratek external HD that bought the farm. . . Google shows lots of firms that might be able to fix, or recover my data. . .

Has anyone used any of these companies, and if so, where they able to fix or recover the data?

Try yodot file recovery. My 4 TB western digital crashed and it brought 95% of my data back. Costs 45 for the license

1) Spinrite
2) Hiren's BootCD (free)
3) Boot to Ubuntu LiveOS (free)

Dropping it from about six inches on a rubberized mouse pad once or twice sometimes gets it to spin up one last time.

Circuitry can be replaced or repaired on hard drives.  One of the guys on my team will do it on occasion to recover data when they won't power on.

If you use the service I linked to it'll cost you $800 for a regular hard drive.

How much does it cost?
We do an evaluation of hard drive for $50 after which we can tell you what is wrong with the drive, the probability of recovery, and if possible we will provide you a list of recoverable files. After the evaluation the cost of recovery is additionally $750 per a drive, or $200 for Flash USB Drives.  If there is a need for parts you will be told the cost of those parts ahead of time.

I used Gilware exclusively for years when I owned an IT services company.  They could recover a drive for around ~$250.00-$500.00 plus the cost of the new HDD.  I always had 100% satisfaction.

Will cost over $1k for professional recovery. Had to use them in the past due to stupid user tricks and it was bank. If memory serves one was $1800 one was $2300.

If it will spin up there is a chance you can recover the data. Even click of death can be recovered.

ETA
Looks like prices have improved.

Well, I found this place that's only a few blocks from my office in Manhattan. . .gonna go over there tomorrow.. got good reviews on Yelp. . .

"Data Recovery Experts".

This is just a small external HD. . .can't remember what the capacity is. . but the model number ends in '250, so I'm guessing 250 GB. .

ETA: it was making a high pitched pulsating squeal, but now. . . .nothing. . .

Company I worked for a few years ago sent one out to DriveSavers for 11GB of critical data and it cost them $3500.

I used to do contract IT for businesses, people never understand that money spent on backup solutions is actually a very, very good investment. Until after it is too late anyway.
