Why does it fly in Charleston and other places?
Should it come down? Edit: Changed to match poll |
|
Taking the flag down won't change a damn thing, those who want to use it as a symbol of hate will continue to.
Those that see it as a historical item will continue to. The stupid and uinformed that think the current flag is one that SC even flew during the Civil War will continue to be. |

I don't think it officially flys in Charleston. It probably does at some historical sites.
What everyone is talking about and debating is the "Confederate Memorial" that's on the SC State House grounds here in Columbia. There is also an African American memorial, memorial for fallen police officers, etc..... |
| I've always been torn on this. I think trying to forget the past is always a bad thing, However I feel like the confederate flag may cause too much emotional harm to still want it around. The nazi symbol was a well established symbol in history, but if seen today evokes a strong emotion for most everyone. While many view the confederate flag as a link to the past, for others it is a symbol of hate that is being flaunted in front of them. I'm going to go ahead and say it probably does more harm than good being flown at publicly owned buildings. |

It's illegal to touch it. |

That and the fact that Irish and white slaves were treated FAR WORSE than black ones. Whites were cheap and blacks were expensive thus it didn't even matter if they killed a few whites cruelly for an example. However back to the flag it is part of our history, let it fly. |
| Perception is everything; back when Billy Idol sported it......it was cool and did not automatically mean racism. Today we walk on egg shells. I try to be conscious of how certain people might perceive it, but at the end of the day it just means so much more then what some lib may think. |

Where is this flag they are speaking of? There is one at the Confederate Veterans Memorial in Columbia. Other than that, I'm not aware of one in Charleston. |

Are you going to go onto somebody's private property and take down their flag? Good luck with that - let me know how it works out. The Confederate flag used to fly over the State House under the American flag, but it was taken down years ago. http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/charleston-church-shooting/south-carolinas-confederate-flag-not-lowered-half-mast-after-church-n378316 " In solemn tribute to the nine people gunned down at a Charleston church, two flags atop the statehouse in Columbia, South Carolina, were lowered to half-staff on Thursday. They will stay there for nine days in honor of each victim. But in a bewildering display, a Confederate flag on statehouse grounds is still flying high. It wasn't an oversight. It's because of state law. " |

People who get their panties in a wad because of a battle flag need to work on having a thicker skin. I'd venture to say most of them really think it was the Confederate flag. |

They tried this shit with the flag of St George.
People who flew flags were branded racist and the rabid left desperately tried to make it a racist symbol. It backfired massively and the flag has been reclaimed from the lefts attempts to turn it into something it wasn't, and it remains part of our national heritage. From an outsiders perspective, the Confederate Flag doesn't have any negative meaning either. It was the flag on top of the General Lee in the Dukes of Hazard, it has a meaning in the southern states that is about regional identity, and it also has a historical significance. I also view it as a symbol of a certain amount of defiance, like the Gadsden Flag. Maybe I am oversimplifying it and there is a much more complex meaning to the flag on your side of the pond but it seems that people are very quick to be offended by a flag which formed part of US history. |

Nope, haters gonna hate and I bet a lot of African American confederate soldiers would agree. FYI they went slaves, but armed and dressed in confederate battle attire.
" While determining an accurate number of African Americans who served in the Confederate armed forces may never be known, the United States Veterans Census of 1890 lists 3,273 Colored men who claimed to be Confederate veterans. Another 542 widows of Colored Confederate veterans were listed by the Census.[43 |
