Cost in your area?
saw one for 2K yesterday(Yellow), and $1400(price reduced)  for a chocolate puppy a bit older
is that the norm

Paid $1k for a silver a year ago. I think the chocolates were $800

I think the bloodline and breeder have a lot to do with the price. I paid up for mine since he was from a line of champion bird dogs.

You can buy a cheap dog with questionable health and lineage and take more of a gamble than one with proven family history and health certificates.

Of course, even dogs with healthy lineage can have problems and dogs of unknown ancestry can be healthy, but you have a better chance with a proven bloodline.

Cheapest part of owning a dog is buying it.

Do you want a pet, a show dog, or a hunting dog?  Those all factor in to what you're paying.

we have a local breeder who I've bought 2 from.
about $500 for a solid dog with good hunting bloodlines, with a rock-solid health guarantee.

500-750 depending on color, lineage and whether they're working dogs or pets.

It depends a lot on the area as well as the lineage of the dogs. If the dog is titled or is AKC registered, it will jump the price up.
Our Lab was purchased in a very affluent area and comes from championship bird dogs. She was $1500
We have a Shepherd who's Sire was a Schutzund 3 titled dog from Germany and his Dam held many titles in show.
He was $2000 but because I sold three dogs for the breeder we had pick of the litter, got full breeding rights and paid $1500

A Lab with strong breeding can easily bring that much money. If you're not careful, so can a puppy mill dog. You really have to do your research.

Don't be fooled about "Silver Labs". They'll never be recognized and they all can be traced back to one breeder. There are only three recognized colors: black, yellow and chocolate. There are no "reds" "whites" or "silvers". As white as my Lab Jack is, he is a "yellow".

There is a lot of butt hurt over this, but this is the truth. Labs are only three colors because Labs are bred to be Labs; they look like Labs and they act like Labs because of their breeding.

Labs bred from hunting stock will command premium dollars.

Price is directly related to lineage.

Chocolates tend to command more due to blacks and yellows being more numerous.

I was just killing time walked  into a "Puppy Store"
But I love Labs, my dad had a Golden but too much shedding prefer a short hair Lab
could not keep my dad's lab out of the water, dog would leave the house walk for a 1/2 mile or so and go for a dip
not ready to get one yet

Field bred hunting lab?  $1K is not completely out of line.  Otherwise, too much.

My lab came from a program for service dogs....he didn't make the final cut , it seems his obsession with anything  resembling a ball was causing problems lol

Our's was rescue, definitely questionable lineage, older dog (2 when we took her in), spayed (because we were required to) but she cost us $175, great companion, too old to train for the field, and very stubborn. We wouldn't trade her for anything.

There needs to be a meme. Buys 3k dog because of health and lineage, gets medical advice on ARFcom and can't run 1/2 a mile. Buys 3k dog for heath a lineage, has never been bird hunting in their life

If you want a hunting or working dog do your research and spend the money to get one from a good bloodline.

If you want a pet there are plenty of Labs at shelters who need homes, and you can bring them home usually for $200 tops. And they will know what you have done for them, and will be eternally grateful. I got the big guy in my avatar last 4th of July for around $180, he was 2 at the time, doesn't leave my side unless he's at the dog park or beach running around with his friends.

I've got a an AKC Chocolate and AKC Black at my feet.  Both females, both $400.  Bought from local hunting boys.  Now a guy who owns the feed store in town paid $3000+ for his Chocolate but the dogs parents have won a truck load of hunting competitions.
