[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Meanwhile in Houston (Page 1 of 3)

Limited work today. Will be interested to see how hard it is to get around. Nobody drowned in a skyscraper this time around, so we have that going for us. ETA: I bitch about the tax level in the Katy area, but our flood control does seem to work in our area. Got some friends inside the beltway who are bailing their house out this morning. |

I took last Friday as well as today off.
My street was an absolute river last night. The water came up a good 15 feet into the front yard. The water in the street was probably a good two feet deep. Stupid renters across the street left two cars parked in the street last night probably because they were to drunk to move them after their beer fest yesterday. Debris line is about 10 inches below the outside mirrors.
I'm drinking coffee and surfing arfcom. |

Told everybody to work from home. My boss sent out that email, after I was at work.
The drive to downtown wasn't too bad from the east side. I did have one guy make it in before I sent the message. He said he'd hang out. Good man. Parts of town got over 10 inches. Montrose at Allen Pkwy is under 13 feet of water. |

I don't know where all this flooding is coming from. Up in Dallas we've got the Trinity River flooding, but I don't think we've had more than 10 minutes of rain in any one day, and it wasn't in torrents either. I don't know how it is down there, but it just doesn't make sense up here. |

Well fuck me! I have a connecting flight in Houston later today, guess I need to check this out. Flew through there this past Wednesday and has a delay due to the storms rolling through. This was last night. Everything is pretty much back to normal save a few areas where they foolishly built structures in a bowl. |

I went to work.
Then again, I work contract and get no days off or holidays. So I was already out money due to Memorial Day. I encountered no flooding. My only worry was whether some leaning pine trees on my property would come down due to the wind and weakened soil. |

| I got into work at 6am this morning. Passed a few swamped out cars of idiots who just charged right into the water (less than a foot). Our building was running off of gen power: no AC, servers down, no network - no phones, etc. Basically a drive in for nothing. Back home now doing little to nothing, since I have access to nothing I need. |

| I'm flying into IAH tomorrow then driving from there to Pearland. Hopefully, shit will have cleared up by then. Is Brazoria county all fucked up too? I have a funeral to attend in Clute Thursday. I sure hope travel is not dicked up. I flew in for a funeral in Oct 1994 when there was serious flooding in and around Houston and couldn't reach the funeral home and missed my step-sister's service because of high water. I really would hate a repeat of that mess. |
