Got to go to days for 5 weeks. Now back to nights.
Fuck 3rd shift. That is all. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

The only way I'd miss 3rd is if the day opening paid $2 per hour and required me to get kicked in the nuts 7x per hour by a draft horse for 5-10's.
The hate will subside somewhat by the end of the week.mthe switch is what has me hating life at the moment. Should have gone to bed 2 hours ago. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

I got sent back to 1st shift when I was promoted, a year and a half ago. Still here. Yes, I said FIRST SHIFT. the day starts a minute after midnight. Second shift is during the day. 3rd shift is afternoons/evenings. I'd decline a promotion like that, unless they could give me a specific term. Having an end in sight would make it more tolerable. I don't mind the overnight shift when I'm on it. But I keep the same sleep schedule on my days off. Right now I'm on a mid 1100-2300 shift and that is for the birds. what sucky hours!!!! that literally fucks your whole day... I'm in my 24th year of nights...the last 10 years or so have been 12 hour shifts.. i do enjoy my nights... |

I love working nights. people always ask me if it "sucks not seeing the sun" I laugh and tell them while they are in their office I am mowing, fishing, doing projects and while they are inside going to sleep I am at work.
its best in the winter when the hours are shorter and they leave for work before the sun rises and get home after it sets. working in a shop with no windows I can only tell if its light or dark outside during my lunch break anyways... |

I really did not really apply to my former line of work (prisons) because simple attrition would advance you but does working straight nights in the private sector stifle career opportunities/promotions?
Even in my line of work if you stayed on nights Watch Commander (LT) was about as high as you could go without transferring to days. There simply were not any higher positions available on nights. Even then "night walkers" had to apply to other Correctional Centers for Captain and above as the LTs on days always seemed to have the inside track. Makes sense as they were used to the daylight BS. |

Cop? I would think that might be an "interesting" shift to work. Machinist. Like Christian Bale. But fatter. And with CNC machines. Feeling a similar sense of doom. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile Don't run over any kids. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |
I miss working nights I started at midnight to 8:30 and then tweaked it to 11pm to 7:30am. Worked one of those shifts for 5 years.
So long as I kept to the same sleep schedule on weekends, it was a breeze. A lot less stress, a lot less bullshit, a much nicer time all around. The only annoying part was when I took vacation...no one really understood that staying up to 9pm was not natural for me at that point. My usual bedtime was around noon-1pm, so being up until the sun went down was just...unnatural
And, waking up at 2am Saturday morning got old after a while..."Now what" was pretty much the mantra of the day. About the only thing to do was go food shopping at the 24 hour grocery store... |

I think it all depends on the company, a person's goals and what they're doing. If all a person wants is to do their job without getting hassled and go home, then it's great. I'm a bit of a natural born kiss-ass and make-process-improvements kinda guy, so I don't just want to be The Parts Fairy, where they put the material under their pillow, and they wake up to parts. I'm a special snowflake, goddammit! If something needs to be changed, or see an opportunity for improvement, all I can do is send an email. I can't follow through with engineers, or have conversations with people about it. Throw the message in a bottle. So yeah, I think it can stifle a career in some situations because you're out of sight, out of mind. At least until there's a problem that makes them think about you. However, in other instances, I can see it creating opportunities where none would otherwise exist. Ultimately, the cream will rise to the top, etc etc, but all paths lead to days. I should be sleeping now. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |
| I have been on days for the last 6 months after working nights for 16 years. I have to admit that I am loving sleeping at night. Unfortunately I am going back to nights in 2 weeks. I will be coming back to days the next chance I get though. The older I get the harder it is to work nights. |

I am at work now.
Me right now after 6 nights straight and I have another 5 to go before I get any time off.
