Explain to me what methadone is and how a methadone clinic works. |
|
Synthetic drug that is supposed to mimic heroin. It doesn't really, but junkies can get it very easily from a clinic. It's supposed to wean junkies off the real stuff. It doesn't...especially when it's abused just like heroin is.
I'm not a junkie, nor do I have personal knowledge of methadone. I did grow up with a father telling stories of when he was young and dumb and out to save the world as a counselor in a methadone clinic. Government backed drug dealers with worthless "clients." |

It's less fun heroin, actually more addictive, but supposed to be used to ween people off opiates. So, it gets them addicted to another drug that is then provided by the government to keep an addict from going about the activities need to support a heroin habit? |

Explain to me what methadone is and how a methadone clinic works. Methadone is a 100% synthetic opiate. The Germans developed it along with other synthetic opiates since external opiate supplies weren't reliable due to British control (India). Methadone is dirt cheap to manufacture and is very long-acting, It works on the same opiate receptors as heroin, and in sufficient dosages can block the high/euphoria of heroin, hence its use in heroin addiction treatment. Because it's so long-acting, it can be dosed once a day through a methadone clinic, usually as a liquid solution orally. This is the best way to dispense it since it's harder to traffic in the drug if patients have to come in every day. Methadone can be very dangerous if not used carefully due to the long duration of action and the dangers of respiratory depression. I've seen many fatal methadone overdoses. You can't beat the cost as it's far cheaper than OxyContin. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

It avoids IV drug use and the diseases associated with it. Dosing is once a day orally. It's ridiculously cheap. Maybe a lesser of two evils situation? Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

So, it gets them addicted to another drug that is then provided by the government to keep an addict from going about the activities need to support a heroin habit? Yup, goal is to replace the illicit drug and then reduce dosage during addiction treatment. Canada and a few other countries have had better luck with just handing out heroin though. |

Quoted:
Methadone Clinics make money by keeping clients. Generally they do not support reduction policies. Why would you want to send your meal tickets away? There is no methadone clinic in this country worried about keeping clients. There are 87 layers of bureaucratic oversight that limit how many patients they can have leading to waiting lists to get in the methadone programs and the nature of the drug makes it hard to get off of. |

Explain to me what methadone is and how a methadone clinic works. It's (usually) a big 40mg 'wafer'. You go in and take a drug test first off. This makes sure you haven't been cheating or doing benzos, which could be fatal mixed with Methadone. Then after your test passes you go to the window and the lady hands you cup of hot water and a piece of a wafer depending on your 'dose' the doctor has approved. You dissolve it in the water, drink it, go on to work. Wake up the next morning and do the same thing. After a month or two they start to trust you with take home doses but you still get called in for random tests and counts. I never made it that long anyway. Suboxone clinics have about put them all out of business. It's a much safer drug and less likely for abuse. |

Are you aware that there are people in this world that have a severe medical condition which causes them to be that way? My mother for instance is one of those people. She is a truck driver that has bad knees and a bad back from driving the truck but you probably do not care about that case.........oh wait.
My mom takes methadone as a painkiller. She fell out of a car as a child and fucked her back up, had 3 back surgeries, 2 steal rods put in, one taken back out, then put back in. She also has scoliosis and osteoporosis. Her back is a mess and she can barely walk. I imagine she would actually die if she quit taking methadone with all the opiates shes taken for years and years for back pain. |

My mom takes methadone as a painkiller. Yeah, it's also a pain killer. Usually the 10mg pill version as opposed to the 'wafers' which are mostly used for junkies. I had one doctor writing me both Oxycontin and Methadone at the same time for years. Strangely enough the DEA busted his clinic not long after I quit seeing him. |

As a pharmacist in LCTF I get numerous Rx for people using it as long term pain management, usually low doses and very old patients. But just like anything thing else, the clinics work for those who really want to quit, but a lot of people just use them as a source for highly controlled medication. |

" methadone accounted for 40% of deaths involving a single drug in 2009" "Methadone is best known for its use in addiction treatment, but the deaths included in the CDC report are not associated with these programs. “We’re not talking about methadone maintenance treatment in this data,” said Frieden in a press teleconference on Tuesday. “All of the evidence suggests that the increase in methadone related deaths is related to increased use of methadone to treat pain.”" http://healthland.time.com/2012/07/03/methadone-a-major-driver-of-prescription-painkiller-overdose-deaths/ The push to methadone for the treatment of pain seems stupid. It is a drug who's analgesic properties wear off hours before the respiratory depression it causes and then the government is surprised when patients take their more before they are supposed to and overdose. |

It can also be used for pain managment when things like fentanyl patches are too expensive. A month of fentanyl patches = 700 bucks or more a month, a month's worth of methadone, 35 bucks. This! The VA had me on if for a while. No I'm not a junkie It was worthless, for me. Morphine was the next step. I don't take anything now. I just deal with it the best I can. Fuck all of those drugs. |

Might do the pain clinic, not sure. |
