Hey everyone. I have a concern. I have owned my bushy m4 for over a year now and I absolutely love it. It hardly jams. I keep it immaculate. Top notch accuracy. etc. But!!!, when I fire even 30 rds the barrell heats up to VERY quickly and get concerned to fire any more rounds through it until it cools off. Is there anything that I can do to prevent it. Do i need to even worry?? What about warping the barrel? Is there any other barrel that is better? fluted? Thanks and God Bless America!

Do you have hte stock handguards on there?
Is there anything around them that would prevent airflow from cooling the barrel?
When you say "hot" how hot are you talking?

Yes, the stock m4 hand guards. So hot that I when I hold the hand guard my fingers get burned from the vent holes placed on the top of the handgaurds.

The only way that you are going to deform the barrel is if you fire 3-4000 rounds rapid fire at one sitting.

It's VERY normal for your barell to heat up under sustained fire. don't worry about it.

The only problem a hot barrel presents if to your hand. DON'T TOUCH THE THING.

Back in the army during night fire, the SAW that my buddy used used to get red hot. Even then the thing would still be fine.

also, if your Bushy "hardly jams", I'd find out the reason why and fix it. (probably bad magazine).

Hope this helps,

Thanks guys. I believe that it still james becuase I use sub grade ammo (PMC 55gr BTHP, bronze edition) I have military mags, green followers and are all permasilked. I want to buy some ammo from ammoman.com but haven't had the chance yet. Would you guys suggest the Lake City Ammo or the 62gr  (I believe it's) swedish ammo he has? Or do you guys use other ammo? Once again, thanks for the advice.

The barrels get burning hot very quickly, no big deal. I don't think you need to worry, though the part about burning your finger on the vent holes seems a little strange.

I fired so many rounds through my CETME last weekend that the wood handguards caught fire![flame]  The barrel was fine though.[8d]

I usually put a little dab of CLP out at the end of my barrels, just before the muzzle.  Smokes up nicely, adding to the ambiance of the range outing.

Dont worry, those new, bigger M4 handguards are designed to facilitate the heating of food items. They will accomodate a hot dog or two. Just insert two hotdogs under the handguard and by the time your done shooting, the dogs are ready! I wonder when they'll perfect the bun toaster function? [smoke]

The heat is normal, but the vents burning your fingers is odd. Do you mean it makes it uncomfortable, or does it actually burn?

You can't damgae a barrel with semi-auto fire.  Full-auto is a completely different story though.

The barrel is considered a "consumable" [BD] They make new ones every day.

The Lake City ammo is good from the feedback on the boards, and I've put about 500 rounds of the 62Gr. swiss through my rifles.  The Swiss is very nice, but sticks to a magnet (AP), so I can only fire it in outdoor ranges.

Ammoman is a great place to get your ammo from.

(edited to add):

Welcome to the board!

My bushmaster does the same thing.  Here is what I do.....

Stick another 30 round magazine in it and let her rip!

I melted my nylon sling almost all the way through at The Great Southern Freedom Shoot last year. It only took a fer 30 round mags to heat it up enough to smear melted sling and weld itself to the barrel.

Pull the trigger an let it happen capin!

I spoke with Tom Barr at Quality Parts Corp(that is what Bushmaster was called a few years ago before they formally changed their name), he said "in semi-auto mode you can't pull the trigger fast enough to damage the barrel, but full-auto is another thing..."
