| Wanting to do some metal detecting on my property, anyone have a recommendation for a low cost amateur detector. Not wanting anything fancy but not wanting junk either. |

The Garrett Ace 250 is typically recommended as a beginner detector. It has good features built in and isn't too expensive. I have one and like it, though I have only used it in my backyard. A pinpointer is super helpful to speeding up your finds. This. It is what I have and works well for anything I am ever going to do. |

Garrett AT Pro and make sure to get the Garrett Pinpointer AT; it will save you a lot of time.
Edit: The reason why AT Pro over the 250 is:

Ace 250 fan boys out in force today
I kid, I kid! I will recommend a Tesoro Cibola. Made in USA, lifetime warranty, very deep, and very easy to turn on and go. You don't need a screen to determine what is in the ground and most of the time they are inaccurate and will confuse you even more. The tone is what you pay attention to. Set your discrimination and listen for the sharp, constant beep of the machine. I had routinely out detected a buddy who used a Garrett gti 2500. He spent more time trying determine what was in the ground while I was nailing coin after coin going on tone alone. Recovery on the Cibola is lightning fast and will detect a coin UNDER a rusty nail. |

I got a deal on my AT Pro several years back from Kelleyco, $400 or close to that. But having had both the Ace250 and the AT I would pick the AT every time. It is very sensitive to gold. I like it as well as my Etrac. Quoted:
