Wanting to do some metal detecting on my property, anyone have a recommendation for a low cost amateur detector. Not wanting anything fancy but not wanting junk either.

i bought a bounty hunter traker iv from hobby lobby. i only used it once before winter and found a few nuts and nails in my yard. now that spring has come i plan on using it a lot more.

Ace 250, aka- the yellow parrot. Around $200.00. Don't waste your money on anything sold at Walmart or Academy.

The Garrett Ace 250 is typically recommended as a beginner detector.  It has good features built in and isn't too expensive.  I have one and like it, though I have only used it in my backyard.  A pinpointer is super helpful to speeding up your finds.

Get the ace.  Good detector for what you want.  And get a pinpointed.  You will be VERY happy that you did.

Garrett AT Pro and make sure to get the Garrett Pinpointer AT; it will save you a lot of time.

Edit:
The reason why AT Pro over the 250 is:


  • more depth

  • waterproof

  • ground balancing to offset the mineralization in the soil

  • higher frequency, so you will get better iron discrimination and higher sensitivity to gold

  • iron audio, you can find targets next to or under iron nails

This may be a dated recommendation, but I had excellent luck with a Whites Spectrum XLT.  I'm sure it has been replaced/upgraded by now though.

doh! forgot to post mine up.
But like alot of guys here, I use the garret ace 250.

Bought it mainly to find my arrows that dissapear under the grass when I miss my archery target.
It finds the tiny field tips easily.

Everyone here is reccomending the Ace 250 which always gets solid reviews. The other one in that range is the Fischer F2. That's what I've got and I've been pleased. Do follow the advice to get a good pinpointer. You'll learn the value of it real quick.

Ace 250 fan boys out in force today

I kid, I kid!

I will recommend a Tesoro Cibola. Made in USA, lifetime warranty, very deep, and very easy to turn on and go. You don't need a screen to determine what is in the ground and most of the time they are inaccurate and will confuse you even more. The tone is what you pay attention to. Set your discrimination and listen for the sharp, constant beep of the machine. I had routinely out detected a buddy who used a Garrett gti 2500. He spent more time trying determine what was in the ground while I was nailing coin after coin going on tone alone. Recovery on the Cibola is lightning fast and will detect a coin UNDER a rusty nail.

I got a deal on my AT Pro several years back from Kelleyco, $400 or close to that. But having had both the Ace250 and the AT I would pick the AT every time. It is very sensitive to gold. I like it as well as my Etrac.
