Handle up. Think of the children... I don't want to hear shit from my safety dept if I report that I stabbed myself at home. You are wearing the appropriate kevlar lined gloves aren't you? |

I don't see why anyone would put sharps up, that makes no sense. Handles always up. The tray is mesh for a reason, and everything inside it gets clean.
I only put big spoons up so they don't block the other items or get stuck (plus, they aren't sharp). It's not cool to have things in bith directions and then to have to flip them around as you put them away. |

Forks and knives point down (handle up). Spoons point up (handle down) My wife does not understand this incredibly simple system. ![]() Every time a woman loads a dishwasher, it is as though she has never done it before. And if she just loads one or two dishes, she does so as though no others will have to be loaded. |

Depends. Really sharp steak knives go point down. Everything else is handles down. Really sharp knives don't belong in the dw. That's one way to get really dull knives. Our good knives don't go through the dw. Handwash only. Our gypo chicago cutlery steak knives do go in the dw (business end in the basket) Spoons, butter/table knives, forks. Business end up where they get washed. |

It truly is a question for the ages.

If the "silverware" is sterling or silver plate it gets hand washed in the sink. I have washed silver silverware in the dishwasher. Everything except hollow handled silverware. I put just 4 drops of dishwashing liquid in the dishwasher and use no other detergent. It does a remarkably good job, makes a fair amount of suds but not enough to cause a flood. I've done the same thing with crystal. It saves time after a party. |

Knives handle up, forks and spoons handle down. My dishwasher's utensil basket has a top with slots to keep everything nice and organized, but they're too narrow for the business end to fit through.
And I have no idea why it never occurred to me to pre-sort the utensils as mentioned above! I am definitely doing that from now on. Having to pick through the basket to get all the forks, then all the spoons, etc., is the worst part of doing dishes. |

It was like something out of I Love Lucy. Cleaned the kitchen floor and on into the breakfast room before I shut the thing off.
Yeah, the warnings about using the dishwasher for sterling would be aimed at the detergents meant for dish washers. |

How can so many people be so wrong? All silverware goes into the rack handles up. This is to keep your nasty, grubby fingers from touching the business end when you are unloading. Why you would do it any other way is beyond me (and simply wrong). Agreed Sheesh. Next you'll be saying that it's NOT okay to just lick a fork or spoon clean and put it back in the drawer if you didn't use it much.

For pokey things, knives and forks, handle up.
Looking down to unload a dishwasher, you can miss seeing the blade of a knife and get cut, bad. I trained my wife early on, on the correct way to load silverware. A few years after we were married, my in-laws came to visit. My MIL decided to be helpful and loaded the dishwasher. Later I went to unload it and didn't see the knife she had place in the silverware basket handle down. Cut the shit out of the back of my hand when I went to grab something else. |

Why you would do it any other way is beyond me (and simply wrong). There's plenty of handle showing below business end to grab onto when unloading. Also, god forbid you wash your filthy hands before unloading the DW. In a retail food establishment, though, I would vote handle up. |
