gladiator arena fighting-Ok so you have to fight in an arena, no missile weapons allowed-what do you choose? (Hey this happens in the movies all the time-good to think these things out ahead of time)

The run and scream like a girl option seems to be a winning strategy.

It worked in Life of Brian

Not a Roman spear, too short.

But a polearm/spear of sorts.

Once you add the shield, I'd say the advantage shifts from spear to sword, therefore I choose running and screaming like a little girl.

Of the choices listed, spear.

Spear + shield would be better.

No missile weapons? Can I not throw the spear? Not that I would, necessarily, but weren't those things pretty much "anything goes" affairs?

Chain: Would just get wrapped around something and yanked away

Fire ax: Too unweildy, you'd be swinging wildly and open yourself up.

Sword and Shield: Not having any skill in either, I'd probably just hack about wildly and tire myself out

Spear: Best option for an unskilled fighter. Easiest to use and keeps you at a distance from your attacker

Running and Screaming like a little girl: Most likely

Ideally I'd take the whole net and trident getup.

Pole arms require more skill than people think.

I think a sword and shield would clean up! A pilum is a missile weapon not a good stabber.

Poll fail where is the different types of gladiators like hoplite and retiarii?

As for a spear. What do you think happens when someone gets inside your guard. with a short sword? It's all over in my opinion. A wall of spears is awesome but one on one of take a sword and shield all day.

I throw a rope off a horse for fun so the chain seemed kinda natural.

Spartacus says sword and shield

The most feared gladiators were the retiarii, who were armed with a weighted throwing net and a trident. They could completely immobilize their opponent by throwing the net over him. And the trident had the advantage of a spear, plus being able to snag an opponent's sword between the tines of the trident.

Remember also that plenty of practice preceded the bout. These people had the skill that amateurs wouldn't have.

Second time tonight I am giving props to the "old crew"

distance equals time

one (Glad) man with a real spear and knowledge of his weapon> one man (Glad) with a sword and shield and knowledge of his weapons

8 feet vs 2 feet for a gladiolus. Shields were small for Gladiators, not Phalanx size but small round ones

Phalanx's were made to preform but the ranks were made up of slaves and Glads dressed in the correct garb for the whatever circus was going on

The heavies like the Murmillo used the large scutum. Others such as the Thraex and Provocator used a medium sized rectangular shield.
