Had a friend at work print this up for me the other day. Pretty useful little widget.

Guys a G-code wizard. I drew up the design Tues. nite, he went home wrote the code, printed it and had it at work for me this morn. Took about 1.5 hrs. machine time. Don't have the file, I'll ask him about it.

I don't know squat about 3d printing.  Would it work better if it was slightly bigger, so that the halves would touch both above and below the tube to help prevent crushing the tube?  I guess you would have to make a few different sizes with the hole being progressively a few hundredths smaller than the tube diameter until you found the size that allowed you to crank it down tight enough to work on the lower without the possibility of crushing the tube because the halves would meet on both sides.
But them again, I still don't know jack about 3d printing. This could be drunken rambling.

Really a very advance technology project it is. I am still amazed how it will can be done.

Very neat, I agree that it should be longer though, at least 2-3x.

Yeah longer would help too.

I'll take three!

No seriously I'd settle for just one.

I thought about that too. The pressure on the buffer tube is distributed over a relatively large area. You really don't need to crank down too much. The square portion at the bottom does most of the work, keeps the tube from rotating. I was looking for a cheap, simple way to install, change out tubes. Always a pain to tighten the castle nut and get the tube to be perfectly in line with the lower receiver.

Longer is totally do-able. It works pretty well as is. I used it to install a new Vltor Mil Spec tube on a lower tonight. Held it rock solid when I tightened the castle nut. Its just a prototype, I guess if I was going to go into full on production injection molding would be the way to go.

I didn't think about action blocks, I need to remember to bring my caliper's home from work tomorrow

Yeah, longer is better(can't argue with that). Thinking next gen. will be 2.0" long, otherwise same dimensions. Should have one to show by this weekend.

What do you have in mind? Do you have access to a 3D printer also?

Here is another project my bud Big Dawg recently printed. 750k lines of G-Code.

Keep the short length and use two in the vise.

Hmm. Don't know if we have enough Nylon for a life sized, maybe 1/4 scale. What kind of vein count you looking for, like 4 veins per inch? Where you want it shipped? Just kidding, sorta.

I'd still want to use two in the vise.

Two 1" blocks may offer more support than one 2" block. But not a problem, as is GD policy we now have both. I will Beta test both versions and let you know.

I know jack about this 3d printing but would it be possible to print a AI style mag that you could use In a vise to hold a bolt gun?  I know they make them for ARs in 223 and 308.

I would think so. Just need to know dimensions, basically just duplicate a magazine but with solid interior and make it longer to provide a clamping surface.

Pretty good, but can you print it faster than you can make an equally functional one out of a piece of scrap wood?

Probably not. Right now with his set-up, which is a Makerbot clone, takes like 1.5 hrs.

Yeah, it's addictive. If you can think it up, you want to make it.
