I bought a kayak about a month ago and took it out last weekend. Exploring all of the inlets and coves, it was easy to lose my direction. I brought a Suunto A-10 with me which worked fine until I flipped the kayak when I hit a wave while adjusting the seat. I stupidly did not have the compass secured, and it was lost.
Since I need to buy a new one, I figured that I'd get some opinions. The A-10 worked great, but it really wasn't the right tool for the job. I won't be navigating or using it with a map. I just need something for general orienting at a quick glance. Whatever I get, I will strap it to my vest, so I don't lose it again. I will also have my phone (GPS) in a dry bag, if I really get lost. The ones that I'm currently considering are the Suunto Clipper (wish it was larger), the Marathon wrist compass, and the Commenga tritium wrist compass. Any thoughts on these or other suggestions? |

Speaking of a good compass, where would you look on the EE for such things? ETA: You may want to research the Cammenga wrist compass, some are saying the face scratches easily and it can get water in it. I actually prefer the Cammenga lensatic as it's rock solid and waterproof. They're not that difficult to use, if you can use a regular compass you can use the lensatic. |
