I have always liked the Browning Hi-Power but was never a fan of the 9mm cartridge.

I had a Hi-Power 40 on layaway at a gunshop I worked at many years ago but spent the money on a Garand instead.

Now Im thinking of looking for a 40 caliber Hi Power.

I have a GLock 23, a Springrfield Armory Champion 45 and numerous wheel guns but would like a Hi-Power.

I also have in the back of my mind a CZ in 40

I get the feeling that many people think the Hi-Power is old world technology.

Why ?

I carried a hi power for many years.  I shunned the tupperware I tried glocks and hated them.  I then tried an M&P.  I sold the Hi Power.

It is heavy compared to newer (plastic) designs. Some don't care for the trigger arrangement. External hammers and to some extent thumb safeties have fallen out of favor for carry pistols.

That is about all I have got for you. I love my 9mm Hi-Power.

Who cares what a bunch of window lickers think?   Both the Hi Power and the CZ are great pistols.  Buy the one you like and don't worry about what anybody else thinks.

You are buying a life saving tool not some fashion statement.

More goblin dirt naps have been dispensed from a hi power than all the glock models combined.

I don't know if that's true, or if anyone keeps track of such statistics, but the hi power was whacking goblins when Gaston was still in diapers.

This was my issue.  Had one.  It was a decent shooter and would have carried well.

Really didn't like the trigger.  Sold the gun.

The one big advantage the Hi-Power still has going for it in the modern age is that is is incredibly slim-profiled, and the ergonomics are superb.

I'm approaching 50k rounds with Hi-Powers, with over 30k on a single Hi-Power.  I love Hi-Powers.  They have an appeal to me that is beyond practicality.  Having said all that, if you can practically carry a Glock or an M&P, there is no reason to carry a Hi-Power.  The reason *I* still carry a Hi-Power is because a) I have a LOT of trigger time with it now, and b) with the right holster, it carries easier and more concealed than many smaller, less practical pistols.

Pretty much spot on.  Don't know why guys are so worried about what others think about their choice in guns.  The 1911 and variants are my go to.  Has been since I first laid hand on one.  One hundred year old design or not it does everything I need it to and nothing I don't and there's not a better pistol out there for me regardless of what the window lickers say.  Get what fits you and your purpose and wear that bitch out.

I've owned (and own) a number of handguns. This is the best one:

Hi-Power in .40 S&W, a full custom by Don Williams. It has a hand-fitted .357 Sig barrel as well, and I shoot that caliber most often, because faster is better. The pistol is fitted with the Safety Fast Shooting trigger components, which allow hammer-down carry on a loaded round. The trigger is magical.

I think it's the finest combat handgun I'll ever own, and I intend to own it until I expire.

Cylinder and Slide offers a nice small ring hammer that takes care of the problem. Or, you can do like Hi-Power guru Stephen Camp (RIP) did, and bob the hammer:

Milt Sparks VM-2 with a Milt Sparks belt is just perfect.  I can wear that with everything from a full-on suit and tie with tucked shirt to a t-shirt and cargo shorts.  I actually bought a Glock 26 thinking that was going to be my concealed carry piece and the Hi-Power was going to be my BBQ gun.  It turned out that after about $200 worth of various Glock 26 holsters, the BBQ holster (Milt Sparks VM2) I bought to go with my BBQ gun, did a better job of concealment.  The discovery was totally accidental; but it has worked well for me for over a decade now.

Body type wise - I'm 6'2, between 200-218lbs for most of that time.  A little bit of muffin top/dunlap disease when I was less fit but nothing dramatic.   Never above a 36 waist.  The VM2/Hi-Power combo has been great.  Conceals much better than supposedly compact guns likes the Glock 26; but has more onboard ammo and a better sight radius.  Downside is height to bore ratio is not great, trigger is less than ideal and more weight (though honestly, the Milt Sparks holster and belt pretty much negates any weight issues).

I've got a Hi-Power (an AIM Surplus Izzy) that Don Williams worked on... it had a decent trigger to start with but when I got it back from him, it had the best trigger I've ever had on a handgun*. Sadly I sent it off to Robar to be refinished later and the trigger, while still well within the acceptable "custom gun" range, got all fucked up.

*Excluding several 1911s that I shot but did not own - as much as I love the Hi-Power, the 1911 is still damn near the best trigger ever for a handgun IMO.

It is worth both the wait and the money.  I purchased my first Milt Sparks in 2002.  I still use the same holster (and it has seen well over a 100 hours of training in firearms classes over and above everyday regular carry) and belt (the belt is looking pretty rough for lawyer appearance, so I ordered a pebbled belt around 2009 to replace it.  Having said that, I still wear the old belt for most around the house, casual stuff.

I had a beautiful Browning grey/blued HP with wood grips made in the 60's. It was a very nice gun, but ergos were terrible. They're nice handguns, but I'd buy a more modern 9mm double stack over the BHP for defensive use. Is it outdated, no. Is it for everyone, no.

OK, here are the problems with that assertion:

1) Even if true, and even if you could buy 9mm at the best price I've ever seen for it in the past 20yrs, you are still looking at $40k just to confirm the statement you just made.
2) That means that no matter how true your statement might be, without independent confirmation, that is not especially useful information because it cannot be confirmed by outside parties without substantial investment.

I've never even shot one.

I mean, they look antiquated as fuck.  People seems to really like them, so maybe one day I'll see what all the fuss is about.

They are the preferred pistol for concealed carry when you are wearing a tux. They are as timeless as basic black.

Take a number of pistols, including the Hi Power out to a remote location. Throw a tin can a few feet away from you. Using each of the pistols, and just point-shooting without aiming, see how far you can bounce the can.

You will see what the fuss is about.

i know a few LEOs that rather carry their personally owned BHPs before using the issued glocks.

BHPs are perfect guns and ill own a few some day.. including my fathers duty weapon he's had on the job since day 1...

Who cares what a bunch of window lickers think?   Both the Hi Power and the CZ are great pistols.  Buy the one you like and don't worry about what anybody else thinks.

You are buying a life saving tool not some fashion statement.

Why ?

Get both?

And a hi power is not outdated....

Neither is this.

The Hi Power is my favorite handgun.  Unfortunately, FN has stopped making any developments for awhile, unless you count the hydro-dipped digital and mossy oak camo ones a couple of years ago.  I guess they've quit making Practical and hard chromed models, and I haven't seen a new production .40 for a while.

What would have been awesome would have been:

Short detective-sized pistol with alloy frame.
Full-sized HP with rail and without mag safety--be great for competition shooting.

Basically, options like the CZ lineup.

Unfortunately, FN has been gomming around with the FN S/X/P which have all been swing and misses.

The market is already saturated with pistol options, I don't see a company like Kimber or Springfield making clones like the 1911 of the mid 90s.
