I have a couple Mercedes trucks that have painted steel wheels and the brake dust is heavy. I've cleaning them with Simple Green which is ok but for the price it sucks.

Any ideals on another product that is inexpensive and does a good job on painted steel wheels?

Simple Green is the strongest I'd use on painted wheels. Sounds like it's been a while since the wheels have been cleanned? Try using it straight unmixed. Scrub it and hose it off.

A brush, hot soapy water.

My BMW was a motherfucking pain in the ass when it came to cleaning brake dust.

ETA: I don't trust any of the harsh chemicals out there. One wrong interaction with the wheel finish...

Have you tried Windex?  My dust isn't that heavy, but Windex or Zep window cleaner seems to cut right through it.

Yep, Sonax is the stuff!

I rotated my tires this weekend and while they were off I took the opportunity to clean the inside of the wheels.  I sprayed them with Sonax and after sitting for a few minutes I rinsed them off and used a sponge on the worst spots.  They looked practically new afterwards.

Can you put a better brake on during the next service?

Meanwhile I'd try an old fashion soap and water scrub followed by some wax.

Brake dust sucks

It would cost $60 a month to clean the wheels on 2 trucks.

This is the stuff I use. Seriously, it works great, it's fairly cheap and it's readily available:

A couple of applications and a good quality wheel brush will remove a lot of the built up brake dust. Subsequent (and regular) applications will remove the rest.
