Interested as to what Arf has to say about this.
"...the exclusive story of how the United States intelligence community funded, nurtured and incubated Google as part of a drive to dominate the world through control of information. Seed-funded by the NSA and CIA, Google was merely the first among a plethora of private sector start-ups co-opted by US intelligence to retain ‘information superiority.’
The origins of this ingenious strategy trace back to a secret Pentagon-sponsored group, that for the last two decades has functioned as a bridge between the US government and elites across the business, industry, finance, corporate, and media sectors. The group has allowed some of the most powerful special interests in corporate America to systematically circumvent democratic accountability and the rule of law to influence government policies, as well as public opinion in the US and around the world. The results have been catastrophic: NSA mass surveillance, a permanent state of global war, and a new initiative to transform the US military into Skynet." |

would not surprise me. a couple years ago i would have laughed at any one suggesting the gov was building a gigantic data center to store and analyze American Citizens electronic communications. In-q-tel is the bridge between the intelligence community and new technology.
Spend some time here. https://www.iqt.org/about-iqt/ Launched in 1999 as an independent, not-for-profit organization, In-Q-Tel (IQT) was created to bridge the gap between the technology needs of the U.S. Intelligence Community (IC) and emerging commercial innovation. We identify and invest in venture-backed startups developing technologies that will provide “ready-soon innovation” (within 36 months) vital to the IC mission. These technology startups are traditionally outside the reach of the IC; in fact, more than 70 percent of the companies that IQT invests in have never before done business with the government. As a strategic investor, our model is unique. Our investments accelerate product development and add mission-critical capabilities with the sole purpose of delivering these cutting-edge technologies to IC end users quickly and efficiently. By focusing on commercial technologies and investing side-by-side with venture firms, we leverage outside funding to help develop sustainable technologies using off-the-shelf products instead of custom-built solutions. On average, for each dollar that IQT invests in a company, the venture capital community invests more than nine dollars. Not sure of this source http://english.pravda.ru/world/asia/14-01-2010/111657-google_china-0/ Moreover, Googles' connection with the CIA and its venture capital firm extends to sharing at least one key member of personnel. In 2004, the Director of Technology Assessment at In-Q-Tel, Rob Painter, moved from his old job directly serving the CIA to become 'Senior Federal Manager' at Google. Tin foil off

Damn In-Q-Tel and their sinister, neo-conservative Algore-rithms! We should all boycott search engines. No more Google or Android! Who's with me? Let's do this! In-Q-Tel has designed some really interesting and useful shit, so have other government agencies. I think the point is "you are always being watched", rather than "OMG WE HAVE TO STOP USING THIS". |

Absolutely - the "You are always being watched" bit is what should righteously piss everyone off. I'm tired of hearing "If you don't have anything to hide it shouldn't be a problem". Guess what, it's a problem because lots of people with nothing to hide are still being watched. That whole presumption of innocence means nothing to those in power.

I did not read the entire article (stopped at the word "neo-conservative"). Help a brother out...what part of the article suggests that the USG is using Google to watch us? I understand that Google uses Google to watch us, but I don't see the claim that this info going to USG agencies. I DO understand how the USG would want to develop and continue to refine algorithms to organize, categorize and search massive data holdings. That's why we came up with an official Arab name naming convention, IED Lexicon, and other meta-data tagging scemes. |

You people kill me.
Is there anything that the CIA doesn't do according to the russian state sponsored media? If the north Koreans ran a news site would you guys cross post it here? Guess what, just like the rest of the world, the USG and USI services had been using massively expensive and inadequate systems for storing and searching data. Google fixed that for civilians. USI uses internal networks to store classified data, communications and projects. They bought google to provide search support to that intranet. It's one of the most reasonable and cost efficient decisions our policy makers and military commanders have ever made. Normally they just buy the shit box cranked out by the latest retiring intel/tech general turned "IT consultant and developer" so they can just upgrade a few years later. Intel fusion was the main post 9/11 takeaway. Having something like google applied to intelligence data is a no fuckin brainer. |

And I see the apologist puppets are STILL quick to jump into the discussions and belittle and mock the reports. If you knew the things that the intel agencies did overseas you would love them. They're not out to get you. They may or may not be out to completely corrupt others' cyberspace. |
