Has anyone else developed this problem, or am I the only one?  In other words, am I a victim of a hack or virus, or did my machine go FUBAR by itself:

My Netscape browser on my WinMe machine (Yeah, I know, but until someone comes up with an AOL DSL Linux client, I'm stuck with either AOL DSL or a dialup, due to the vagaries of the phone system here) locked up last night.  I closed out, and got the BSOD (Blue Screen O' Death).  I do the 3-finger salute (CTRL+ALT+DEL) to reboot.

Upon coming up, it changes my system settings and shortcuts.  Now, my desktop only has the default icons, the START button doesn't work, and the Explorer window won't show any items unless I hit "VIEW ALL ITEMS ON THIS DRIVE".  I had to use Find File to get my AOL file, and to get my Netscape.  All my buttons are off the taskbar, too.

I'm running AVG anti-virus with automatic updating, which last updated yesterday before this occurred.  I ran a virus search (again, which I have set to run automatically every day) and it shows nothing.

I know what I'm doing tomorrow (BIOS Low Level drive reformat and re-installation of Every Goddarned Thing), but I just wanted to see if I was an isolated case before I start worrying.  I used to use Zone Alarm, but it interfered with everything and got to be too much of a pain.  I had to do a full low-level reformat and re-installation then, too, to get rid of it.

It may have been an attack from the Great White North, since I started hanging around Canadian Gun Nutz site this week[;D]

Edited to add that all my cookies, histories, and passwords went bye-bye as well.

Thanks!  I didn't see any DSL instructions, but it's worth a shot.  From the other online docs I found when I did a search, it is part of Mandrake.  Since I have 7.2, it should be on there.  Once I'm up and running, I'll upgrade the Mandrake.  It'd be simpler if I had a CD burner.  Grrr[pissed]

I may be gone for a few days!  (Gotta stock up on beer and caffeine...)

Good news:  I'm back online.

Bad news:  Peng doesn't work with the DSL that I get through AOL.  It is not a true "always on" connection, and you have to go through their gateway for service.

Worse news:  Had to stick with WinME[puke]

Thanks for the help, Kar98
