[email protected] Abstract: In Mozambique, as in many sub-Saharan countries, measles remains a public health problem. We conducted cross-sectional surveys in which we assessed measles-specific antibodies in serum and breast milk by plaque reduction neutralization (PRN) assay and measles secretory IgA in breast milk by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. A total of 151 persons<1 month to 23 years of age were surveyed; 81 (53.6%) 151 had prn titers equal or above the protective level (>/= 200 mIU/mL). We found many serosusceptible persons, including 20.5% in whom no PRN antibody was detected. Almost all (96%) infants 6-8 months of age had non-protective PRN titers. Overall, 20.7% (6 of 29) of persons known to have received measles vaccine had non-protective titers. The geometric mean titer (GMT) of breast milk PRN antibodies was 41.6 mIU/mL (95% confidence interval [CI] = 34.0-51.0 mIU/mL) and the secretory IgA GMT was 227.6 (EU/mL) (95% CI = 179.1-289.1 EU/mL). The PRN titers of breast milk tended to increase with age. A notable proportion of the population in Manhiça, Mozambique apparently remains susceptible to clinical measles despite recent mass vaccination campaigns. Article Published Date : Nov 01, 2008 |

It isn't about complete immunity. There's a chance that a vaccination could fail any given individual. However, vaccinations do provide increased resistance to infection and the greater the percentage of the population that is vaccinated the greater the community resistance to the spread of infection, resulting in far fewer infections and reducing the spread of infection. If you look at the recent measles outbreak, there are probably one or two who had received their vaccinations, but they will represent a very small percentage of those who were infected with the disease. |

Vaccinations are for faggots.
A Costco location in Gilroy, California is one of the latest sites exposed to the measles outbreak that began at Disneyland in mid-December. A measles-infected shopper visited the store while contagious, according to a Santa Clara County health official and NBC News Bay Area.
Warning flyers were posted at the Costco and a nearby Walmart that the shopper reportedly visited on January 18. The shopper may also have visited a nearby restaurant, according to NBC Bay Area; however, the name of the restaurant has not been released. A recently released study documented lower levels of vaccination against the once-considered-eradicated viral disease among the graduate-level educated and lower income communities in northern California. Though reasons varied for under-vaccination, some parents site controversial connections to debilitating health side effects from the vaccination as a reason to opt out of having their children receive basic vaccinations. Officials sent home 66 Palm Desert High School students Wednesday, telling them to miss up to seven days of classes because they haven't been immunized for measles.
The students won't return to school until Feb. 9 unless they confirm they've received immunization or show proof of resistance as determined by a Titer test, according to the Desert Sands Unified School District. The district's decision came just two days after a student was sent home with a suspected case of measles. She was cleared to return to class on Tuesday. "We're trying to prevent a second wave of cases," Dr. Cameron Kaiser, Riverside County Public Health Officer, said in a statement Wednesday. link Content concerns, take 'em up with the author. |

OK: Your second study you site (The NEJM): After the survey, none of the 1732 seropositive students contracted measles. Fourteen of 74 seronegative students, all of whom had been vaccinated, contracted measles So of the total of 1806 tested students....4% didn't develop immunity from the vaccinations. Of the vaccinated and immune students 0% got Measles. Of the vaccinated and non-immune students (that 4% the vaccinations didn't 'take')...19% of them developed Measles.... So...overall 14 out of 1806 Vaccinated kids developed Measles (or 0.8%). That's 'Secondary School Kids'...so call it between 11 and 16... Let's contrast that to a study in a non-vaccinated population (Int J Epidemiol. 1989 Dec;18(4):952-8. Epidemic measles in an isolated unvaccinated population, India.): The age-specific attack rates were 22.4%, 54.5%, 46.2% and 35.3% for children under 1, 1-4, 5-9, 10-14 years of age respectively. In as many as four villages, the attack rate in children below ten was 80% or more. Secondary attack rate among family members was 70%. Overall, 82% of children with measles developed complications which consisted mainly of pneumonia, diarrhoea and dysentery. The age-specific case-fatality ratios in infants and children 1-4 years of age were 23.1% and 11.5% respectively; So in a similar age group (yes, you have to go outside the US to find large unvaccinated populations....they had 35% cases (the 10 to 14 year olds). |

The neighborhood where I grew up completely resembles Mexico now. It's wierd watching liberals circle the wagons and blame the tiny minority of people who opt out
of vaccinations, and the flood of illegal immigrants have zero responsibility for this. It's breathtaking. |

PHOENIX — With as many as 1,000 people across three Arizona counties potentially exposed to the measles, state public-health officials are asking people who think they may have come in contact with the virus to isolate themselves.
In addition, they are asking those who may have been exposed not to show up at doctors' offices, emergency rooms or urgent-care centers, where others could be exposed to the highly contagious virus, which can linger in the air for two hours. Maricopa County Public Health Director Bob England said parents who are concerned about sending their children to school or day care should start asking direct questions. LOS ANGELES (AP) -- With California gripped by a measles outbreak, Dr. Charles Goodman posted a clear notice in his waiting room and on Facebook: His practice will no longer see children whose parents won't get them vaccinated.
"Parents who choose not to give measles shots, they're not just putting their kids at risk, but they're also putting other kids at risk - especially kids in my waiting room," the Los Angeles pediatrician said. |

CHICAGO (CBS) – Cook County and Illinois public health officials have begun investigating a cluster of measles cases linked to a daycare center in Palatine.
In a joint statement, the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Cook County Department of Public Health said the cluster includes five infants who have ties to KinderCare Learning Center, located at 929 E. Palatine Rd. in Palatine. All five children are under age one, including four from the suburbs, and one from Chicago. Lab tests have confirmed measles cases in two of the children; the other three have been diagnosed with measles, but doctors were waiting for lab tests to confirm the diagnoses. I read this morning that MS has mandatory vaccinations and hasn't had a single measles case in over twenty years. CA is vaccination optional, and we've got 100 cases currently. |

This would be funny, if it weren't also tragic and utterly needless.
I'm guessing that if you asked the parents of any of the kids with measels right now if they would vaccinate their kids if they could do it over again, they'd say yes. Part of me wants to scream 'you were told this would happen', the other part just feels sorry for them. Measles is an awful set of symptoms on top of being potentially fatal. Watching your kid go through that, knowing it's your goddamned fault, must feel horrible. At least I hope it feels horrible. There's probably still some asshats saying 'well, at least my kid isn't autistic!' while the poor thing sits there suffering from a infection the parent never had to worry about. |

People keep wanting to blame illegals, but I haven't seen any evidence that they are the cause of the outbreak. In fact vaccination rates in Central and South America are pretty good. In fact per UNICEF vaccine rates are 94% for Latin America Mexico Measels Vaccination rate in 2011 is 97% I will blame illegals for a lot of things but lets not spread hysteria either.
