Anyone know the "bullet proof" rating of the PASGT Kevlars? Someone said they were equivalent to NIJ level IIa, is that true? Or is there an equivalency for helmets?
Anyone have data on these?

I wouldnt trust mine to stop a rifle round...

My understanding is that it will stop a 5.56 at 250 yds or greater.

Better than nothing, I suppose.[rolleyes]

Kevlar helmets are roughly equivalent to level 2 protection.
They are rated at V-50 which is a rating that means half of the projectiles are stopped and the other hal penetrate. For helmets this refers to fragmentation NOT bullets.

There are commercial PAGST style helmets rated at Level II or Level IIIa.

Not sure that the actual mil-spec helmets were ever subjected to "level" testing.

They are fairly tough, due to their rounded shape, which tends to deflect rounds, and the material they are made from.

The kevlar stops nothing.
You are so sick and tired of having that 5 pound piece of shit on your head you merely wish to be shot in the head.
Hence the protection.
Its not that it stops bullets, you are just happier that you have been shot.

some one MUST the photos the helments that were used to answer this exact question.
Ive looked and looked but no luck..  It was mabye a little over a year ago on ak47.net I believe...

Dont know what asner you were hopeing for but it aint pretty .. from those "tests" every single 7.62,5.45 amd 5.56 went clean thru at 100 yards.

I always looked at the flak vests and even the helmets as just protection  from falling debrie.. and MAYBE handgun rounds..

the helmet is pretty effective i think. i read an article about a guy with the 101st that has been shot in the helmet 3 times. twice in kosovo and once in the "stan i think...anyone else remember that story?

personally i tr ditch the helmet whenever possible. its my assertion that being able to move and hear will help you to avoid getting shot in the first place. thus i ditch the 30lbs worth of flak and kevlar and go with a boonie and the FLC. however i always wear it in a fixed position or a tactical vehicle

There's one in the 82nd Museum at Bragg where stopped a 7.62x39 from an AK in Greneda.  It reportedly saved the life of the soldier.

from what I've read it's not terribly effective at stopping any rifle rounds but will stop 9mm ammo at point blank range

I hated that damn K-pot with a passion! The most uncomfortable POS I ever had to put up with, the whole time I was in. When I got to Ft Hood in '87, we (3-82FA, 1CD) were the only battalion I know of that still got issued the steel pot. Now THAT, I could wear for days, and it didn't bother me a bit. Then, after a few months, we had to turn 'em in, and get stuck with those f*cking K-pots. I will say, though, that the K-pot does a damned good job at driving net stakes into even the hardest ground.

Even though I hated the thing, when I PCS'd from Augsburg, I brought my K-pot with me (I told the guy at CIF that the 548 ran over it at Graf), and when we turned in our steel pots at Ft Hood, I conveniently "lost" mine (statement of charges, big deal), and I still have them both.

A buddy of mine "found" and extra one sitting around once.  We tested it ourselves.  We shot .45 and 10mm at it and it stopped them both.  The .45 got stopped dead in it's tracks while the 10mm went in a few layers and slid about 4 inches between.  Then we broke out 5.56mm and 7.62X39mm and they burnt right through it.

Now that being said.  I'd trust mine to do the job it was ment for.  It's now supposed to be "bullet proof."  But it is supposed to stop flak.  And I feel that it would do just that.

A K-pot would probably stop grenade fragments and shards of flying glass, concrete chips, etc fairly well, but against Arty shrapnel----forget it. The casing of an HE round blows into pieces that weigh POUNDS, and no helmet or flak jacket on this earth is going to stop that.
