A detent spring slips from under the razor blade and goes airborne.
There are few moments in life when a man summons the instant concentration of a Buddist monk. Your eyes, ears, and body all become one with the world around you in a fleeting attempt to locate the impact and subsequent journey of the vital piece. You can almost see the face of God. The bastard flew into a crevice and rested gently flush with the floor. |

Heck I've dropped little pins on the floor right where I'm standing. Only to have them end up 3 feet away from where I was, and under something! It never fails. 
That's why I have extras of everything!

I turned the lower over for something, and the safety detent fell out. Couldn't find it to save my soul. I went and got another one, and finished the install. Of course once I was done and cleaning up. There that little sucker was. It's like it came out of it's hiding place just to mess with me. Yup I have extras of all small parts,pins and springs. It's cheap insurance.
Next time you order something big. Just add a bunch of individual little parts. I believe most of mine came from Brownells |

It pays to have a cat nearby when putting a lower together. When I put my first one together I had one of the detents and springs go flying. I heard it hit the ceiling then the floor, but had no idea where it was. My cat did though. They notice any little movement. I noticed him staring at something on the ground, and followed his eyes, to find my detent. |

grab a 1/4" hitch pin and this will probably never happen again. best $1.25 tool ive ever bought  aka Clevis Pin I had to use some wet or dry sandpaper to slightly sand down the Clevis pin I purchased in order to make it fit but that only took a few minutes. Always advisable to buy a couple extra detent pins just in case. |

I'm the same way I have several parts left over from parts kits. Also from changing out parts to what I want. I like to build, and I like certain things. I also modify existing weapons as my tastes change. Always looking for a better mousetrap, I guess!

Get your self a big clear bag and do it with the entire lower inside the bag It helps contain the fliers. That's not a bad idea... That's what I do now. Too many lost springs. I assemble the whole lower inside a gallon zip lock bag. |

Ha. My first build I didn't have spares and had to wait a week. Now I have 8 extras and it hasn't happened since. |

Even with the Clevis pin, I still do the operation under a clear plastic bag if I can help it.
With greasy fingers I've had the Clevis pin slip out and let the spring fly just as the end of the Clevis pin clears the receiver hole and comes free. Have to remember to keep the Clevis pin pushed hard against the pivot pin as you are sliding them over so it doesn't do that. |

The idea that a cat may have usefulness related to building AR lowers may be too much to bear.

| the clevis pin is a clever idea, but i've never had an issue. i just put the spring and detent in place and push it in with the end of the pivot pin, then line up the hole and install. hell, in the video posted above, theres even a dimple in the pivot pin to keep the detent from sliding off the pin! |
