in 1814 I took a little trip along with col Jackson down the Missip.  We took a little bacon and a little beans

And we fought the bloody British down in New Orleans...

We fired our guns and the British kept a comin',
There wasn't 'bout as many as there was awhile ago

In 1968 we took a little trip,

Along the Mekong Delta in a Huey Gunship

We took a lot of ammo and we took our M-16s

And we fought the bloody Vietcong south of the DMZ

We fired and fired by Charlie kept a comin'

We fired some more until the barrels melted down

We fixed our bayonets and charged Charlie

Pushed them all the way, to the Gulf of Tonkin

Hadn't listened to that song since we had a record player in our house in the late 1970's.

As soon as I saw your thread title in GD, I started singing the line you posted here to myself.

Almost 40 years since I've heard that song.

Old Hickory said we could take 'em by surprise
If we didn't fire our muskets 'til we looked 'em in the eye
We held our fire 'til we see'd their faces well.
Then we opened up with squirrel guns and really gave 'em ... well

We fired our cannon till the barrel melted down
So we grabbed an alligator and we fired another round.

We filled his head with cannon balls and we powdered his behind
And when we touched the powder off the gator lost his mind

We were in New Orleans a couple of years ago.   We took a river boat down to where the battle took place.  I could just imagine the cannons firing and the smoke roiling across the battleground.

My wife is from Chalmette.  As many times as I've been there, we've never gone to the battlefield.

We fired once more and the British started runnin'

Yeah they ran through the briars and ran though the brambles
and they ran through the bushes where a rabbit could't go
They ran so fast the  hounds couldn't catch them
on down the Ms to the Gulf of Mexico

We looked down the river and we seen the British come.
And there must have been a hundred of'em beatin' on the drum.
They stepped so high and they made the bugles ring.
We stood by our cotton bales and didn't say a thing

A song from my childhood in mississippi delta, makes me think of my  granny, rest her soul.  I had forgotten about it.  Well done OP.  God bless ol hickory and god bless our cotton fields.

Andrew Jackson was a Nazi.

If there was any justice in this world his likeness would be removed from the $20 bill, to be replaced with Chief Sitting Bull.

The very first article on my research was on an incident that happened during the Battle of New Orleans.

The City of Greenville in Kentucky has a statute in his honor.

We would have most likely lost Louisiana if it weren't for John Lafitte and his cannons, men, and powder supplies.
Jackson's men were almost out of powder and shot until they agreed to give Lafitte and his men amnesty and citizenship in exchange for his help.
French pirates were the real heroes of that battle.
