I have been mainly a dog lover my whole life. I like big block headed labs. However, our yard is so small that a fine animal like that would be terribly unhappy. We have another house in the country that we may move to eventually, and that is when I will give some lucky lab a great home. I have never really been interested in cats mainly because of the smell. Recently, my family outvoted me and we adopted a young tabby. I have to confess that I am completely taken by this animal. He is extremely playful and LOVES to hunt. It is fascinating to see him stalk and pounce at night. I would hate to be on his "list" if I was a crawling bug or mouse because he is relentless in his pursuit to kill. He will sit completely still for as long as it takes to get the perfect death leap. He is great with the kids, even my two year old who pulls on him constantly. This little guy is one of the best pets I have ever had. I never thought I would become attached to a stinkin cat, but I am. Have any of you hardcore dog lovers ever made the switch with similar results?

Smell?  Cats don't have a smell that I've ever noticed, and we have four.  Now DOGS stink to high heaven.

I misspoke. The cat itself does not stink. The litter box, if you dont clean it everyday, is horrible. I based my "smell" theory around previous visits to some friends, who are cat owners, houses. It smelled like cat shit in there all the time. I guess they were not very clean?? Dogs stink like dog and not like dog shit...LOL. Dog stink I can handle. As of yet, our house does not smell like a litter box.

This guy has been my best friend for 14 years. I love dogs too, but I live in a travel trailer and don't have room for one. If I win the lotto and get a ranch I will get a dog, but till then my pal rules  John

What a beautiful cat!

I have two of them. They are much cleaner than dogs, and you are correct, it's the BOX that can stink.

People with houses (usually trailers) that smell like cat piss are usually dirty to begin with.

Buckeye and Huey.  I call em the Butt Brothers (tho Buckeye is a girl) cuz they like to sit Butt to Butt like this.

Unfortunately Buckeye has had cancer for over a year is on her last legs.  We will have to get a new playmate for Huey as he will die of loneliness or else kick me completely off the bed. [;)]

You are correct Sir.

The rest area at the top is about 15 road miles to the east of me.

It's on my list of favorite cycling rides.

I love that area!  In the past 3 yrs, I have prob been out there about a dozen times.  Looking forward to my next trip in March.  Not sure if I will make it down to Prescott and Jerome, tho - my travels may keep in Flag.

I have no idea why, but that seems like a perfect name for your cat.

Lot's o' fur there Madison.  Do you think if you brushed him long enough, there'd be nothing left?

I was always a dog lover and HATED stinking cats, until about 13 yrs ago. My ex-fiance wanted a kitten, so we went out and got her one. She saw an ad in the paper for kittens to a good home. When we walked into this lady's house, it smelled like HELL! There were 7 cats that had a litter, so there was kittens and cats everywhere. I wasnt sure who I wanted to boot more, my fiance or the home owner. Anyways, she was looking through, I turned around and saw this little bitty ball of fuzz sitting behind me that had sphaghetti sauce all over her face. It was the funniest thing I have ever seen. I told my fiance that this kitten was the one and took her home. This little shit was into everything (which explained the sphaghetti sauce on her face). I still didnt like having it around until one day when my fiance was bitching at me, the cat started jumping up and down, and started screetching. I just lost it. After that the cat was my buddy. My fiance and I broke up a few months later, but she wasnt taking the cat. Since that day the cat has always been sleeping on my bed, or sitting in my lap, while I am at the computer. I dont think I could have found a better pet!

Have had many of both over the years and like both.  Personally like Siamese and use to breed them.  Ever have 12 cats in a two bedroom apartment.  Not a boring moment, I can tell you. Have two dogs now but we want a cat to make the dogs miserable. LOL

No shock, about your attachment and cat's aren't for sissies.  They are natural hunters and far more cruel with their prey than any other animal on the planet except man.  I like that in them. LOL

Great pics guys, my famillies been over my back going ohhh, aahh, look at that one he has attitude.

Actually, Madison is pretty scroungy most of the time.  Most of the Persian and Himalayan cats we've had in the past were never this bad.  She doesn't mat too bad though.  And no, it doesn't seem to matter how much we brush her she's still full of hair!

Jack looks exactly like my mothers old cat Louie. Short for Lucifer. He was one mean son of a bitch. I still have scars, ten years later. I loved him though. His kidneys gave a few years ago. That was hard on us. My mom had had him since before I was born.

I moved out to the country about 11 years for the kids.
Well the kids are grown up now and out of the house, but the 3 cats we brought along are still here.
We kept one big black kitten out of a few litters, so we have 4 outside, sometimes inside cats.
If we are slow for their dinner, they will sometimes go and kill something and lay it by the back door to send a message.
I like my dogs, but cats have attitudes.

As someone pointed out, cats don't smell, it's the litter. Congrat's on your new cat. Here's a few notes for the new cat-owner:

Get the biggest litterbox you can find. The more litter there is the less smell.

Get a litterbox with a cover, it keeps the litter from flying everywhere. Some cat's won't like the cover though, but most actually prefer a little privacy. You must work with the cat in this respect, because you won't be able to beat bad behaviors out of them, they are stubborn!

Use clumping litter. It smells less and makes it much easier to clean the box. Again, work with your cat to find the clumping brand it prefers, a couple of extra bucks on the premium brand is a lot less than all the cleaning products you will go through if the cat does not use the box. Don't flush the clumping litter, you'll wind up with plumbing issues.

Clean the box everyday. It's faster than walking the dog. Hell, it's faster than wiping your dog's paws off in the winter. It's less gross than picking up after the dog. Cat's are clean by nature, they will be more inclined to use a clean box.

If the cat does have an accident (or more likely, an "on purpose"!), use a purpose built enzymatic cleaner. You've got to get the smell out (and cat's sense of smell is way better than us, of course) or the cat will be enticed to go in the same place again.

If you are starting out with a kitten, use several small litter pans spread out around the house. Start moving them slowly over a period of 4 weeks to the one place you want the box. Kittens don't have the discipline to make a big trip to the one big box. This helps prevent accidents and is a good behavioral training method.

Coolest product alert: the stealth litterbox. Check it out at http://www.pfprivy.com/. On my 4th cat now, they all loved it. I love it. Visitors walk right by it and don't even notice it.
