| Never owned a tablet or even messed with one. Do any of the small tablets run excel spreadsheets and microsoft word? Maybe one of those crappy little things with a detachable keyboard? I need something small for work, don't have much desk space in the data van out here on the frac site. |

Microsoft Surface will run office programs.
All in one PCs will save space too. Lenovo All in one |

Lots of free apps will let you view spreadsheets, word documents, powerpoints, and PDFs. In a lot of cases, you have to get the paid version(s) to edit. Some are better than others in different regards; generally simplicity and ease of use versus feature-richness.

| Get a 12 inch ultrabook. You don't want to type lengthy documents on a tablet so you will have to always have a keyboard attached to a tablet. An ultrabook gives a little more screen real estate and is a more solid device. Typing on a tablet right now which is what it is good for, internet and short notes. |

Microsoft has versions of Office for full Windows tablets made lots of companies, for their own Surface RT tablets, for iPads, and coming soon Office for Android tablets (link). The iPad and Android apps offer what Microsoft calls "core editing capabilities". You need Windows for a full power, all-features-known-to-mankind Office. Full Windows tablets run a full version of Windows with all the power and problems of full Windows. HP and Dell and Toshiba all make them, as do a number of others. Here's the low end, $100 for an HP Stream 7 Signature Edition. More tablets at the Microsoft Store (link to page) or in person, no crapware. $100 - $500, and then more for the Surface Pro 3 which you've seen advertised on TV. The Surface RT tablets run a limited version of Windows called "WinRT". They include free full versions of Office, but after that you can only run "modern" Windows Store apps. The full screen Win8 apps. You can't install Chrome or Firefox or Photoshop (bad), but they don't get malware or crapware and don't rot over time (good). As for Android tablets, I have Nexus 7. Rock solid Android as Google intended it, with no crapware from Samsung. $265 at Best Buy. |

Surface RT is Restricted in having to have access to the internet to do most things.
Surface PRO is not Restricted to having to have the internet and can work as a normal PC. Asus Transformer Book T100 (which I am using to post this from right now) on Windows 8.1 came with Microsoft Office Home and Student bundled (not the new MS Office 365 which is a yearly subscription) and runs almost all Windows Programs (I have not run into anything it will not run) It is a decent little tablet PC with a detachable keyboard included (the Surface keyboard has to be purchased separately) and comes with 64 G ram and can use a 64 G Micro SD card for expansion (along with a micro USB in the tablet and a full size USB 3.0 in the keyboard unit where you can attach other memory or devices as in a Network or Serial COM Port) it also has Bluetooth for a mouse if you want. Comes for between 300 to 400 dollars depending on where you but it from (Tiger DIrect, New Egg, Wal Mart , Staples etc...) Ted... |

Do you need branded Excel and Word? Or will Google Docs suffice? As was said Microsoft Surface or a Windows tablet like the Lenovo Yoga will run branded Office. If you can use Google Docs you can get an Android tablet. MS Office apps are free (word, excel, PowerPoint) for apple and android now for personal use, and available paid for business use |

There are some reviews that say it isn't available for certain tablets, like the Nexus, and Galaxy Tab 3, Galaxy Note Pro. Lots of bad reviews in general.

Presumably it will work on some Android tablets, but it won't be optimized for the additional screen real estate. The Android tablet app is still in preview, but will be similar to Office for iPad, and optimized for 7" to 10" tablets. |
