I'm looking at a few used Model 100s (in 243) at the LGS but I'm not super familiar with the platform. Is there anything in particular I should look for? This shop has had them for close to two years and they're for $650. I bet I could talk them own a bit, is that already a good price? I'm not sure where else to ask but GD since it's not technical.

Winchester model 100 semi auto.....is it a pre 64 model...the checkering is a quick tell...the fine checkering will be pre-64 and the basket weave will be later model. The pre 64 tend to bring little more money. Not a terribly popular rifle but capable....throw a number at him and see what he says.....If I were looking for one I would be hard pressed to drop more than $500 -$550 on a vgc rifle
eta: there was a recall a few years ago for faulty firing pins I believe... |

magazines are hardnearly impossible to find and it is probably one of the toughest rifles to take apart that you will find. Had a .308 years ago. Worked fine. Excessive recoil for a semi-auto .308. Accuracy was o.k. An over-rated firearm, in my opinion. $650 for a .284 would be a decent deal because they are hard to come by. Your LGS has them priced way too high. I'd recommend a Remington 7400 series for a semi-auto .243. |

I have one around here somewhere in 308...I haven't fired in years but always ran fine when I shot it......the model 100 was semi auto version and Winchester built a sister gun model 88 lever action I had an 88 in .308. Sounded like a rusty gate operating but that sumbitch would drive tacks. I traded in on a 760 Carbine in 30-06, which I still have. I wish I still had it though. |
Look for someone with a large barn that will let you practice shooting from inside, so's you can see where you are hitting when daylight appears.
My best friend killed his first deer with one, but the accuracy was, um, less than steller. He tried bedding it, handloads, finally gave up. It lives in the back of his gun safe. |
