Today my computer will  boot up and run but my display monitor won't stay lit. I have to keep turning it on and off to see what computer is doing. I get about ten seco ds before it goes dark.
I started my AVG antivirus to see if it finds anything. In the meantime I checked display setting and they had not changed to reflect such a setting.

Does this sound like a bug or a hardware problem?

Sounds like you need to check that display on another system and go from there.

See a doc, get a shot.

As above, try the monitor on another system.

Also, try a different cable from PC to monitor.

VGA for dvi/hdmi display? If its dvi/HDMI check / change the cable.  Does the power light go out of the display?  Does the display have a sleep setting?

Good news - doesn't sound like any malware/virus I know of ...

Bad news - sounds like your PC is hibernating the monitor.

Try booting into the safe mode and adjusting the power savings to maximum performance/minimum power savings.

It sounds like the inverter for your backlight on your monitor is bad. It's shutting itself down due to heat, which is why you're getting your 10 seconds of display before it shuts down.

If you're handy, it's a 30-40 dollar fix.

If not, it's a great excuse to buy a new monitor.

If you'll post the monitor make and model I'll find the parts you need to fix it.

Hey, thanks. :)
It's an Acer LCD
Model No. AL1917 C
Version AL1917 Cd
Power rating 100-240V~50/60Hz

I am NOT handy but there's always a first time for everything.

It's out there.  If you catch it see a Doctor and get rid of it.

I've had a monitor do this exact same thing.  Turned out to be a power issue in the display itself.

It's usually cheaper just to replace the monitor than bothering to try to fix it (unless you know what you're doing and have time on your hands)

Try another screen and go from there.

If you can desolder and resolder capacitors you may be able to fix of cheap.  Capacitors are a common flat panel problem

well there's your problem. we had an acer monitor go into hibernation when the user was actually typing. Sent it off and 6 weeks later, received it and it does the same thing. once more we shipped it off with acer paying the shipping this time. 6 weeks later it shows up (im pretty sure it was in the same box and never opened). Same f'ing thing. Threw it in the trash and now we have a new rule.
Absolutely no acer products, ever
go get an asus 24" and be done with it.

Well, given that the time limit on my trial version of Inventor expires in about twenty three days, time was of the essence, so I went ahead and replaced the Acer version with an HP LED 23" monitor. I will hold on to
the Acer monitor and look for the replacement partand see if I can get the problematic part HKUSP45C promised to locate, and I will try my hand at a repair with it. If I can get it running I'll have a completely unjustified
sense of accomplishment AND I'll be able to run dual monitors. Maybe. Can you do that with different ports. I ran the Acer off of VGA, but this new HP is using DVI. I don't have two DVI ports...but I do have two VGA ports.

The new HP monitor is an LED and the resolution is really nice and sharp. The Acer was LCD, and okay, but this monitor is quite nice . Pleased, I am. Just one thing...response time seems sluggish... I had to install
drivers, of course. Can a display monitor slow computer processing times? I know I must sound an absolute dolt, but my computer is over ten years old. I'm not up on tech.
