| I want to install a TV above my fireplace and I need to add a outlet behind where the TV will be. There is a outlet to the right of the fireplace near the floor I was going to pigtail off of and run Romex up inside the wall, over to the left, and back down above the fireplace. Problem is I'm running into fire blocking and is turning into a nightmare. There is no fire blocking above the fireplace. Question is can I tap into the feed wire that is laying in the attic and just install a j box in the attic and run a wire down to where I need it? Thanks. |

As long as the j box is left accessible I have had to do that, Although not ideal. And TV's don't belong above the FP. I can't stand houses designed like that. What he said. TVs should be at natural eye level when seated. Most fireplace mantles are too high so that you end up with your neck craned back to watch. |
| Find the wire and if it has enough slack and if not enough slack to cut and put a single Jbox in, just put in 2 Jboxes. The little Fluke or similar pen type that read a hot wire by putting on the romex jacket will help ensure you have the right breaker turnened off. A ARC flash with pliers in the attic on Christmas would be bad. Wear eye pro and use insulated pliers to cut wire if you are not sure. |

Yeah, tapping into a junction box is fine.
TV should be fine above the fireplace as far as heat is considered, especially if its a gas fireplace. I don't think I would mount over a wood stove though (not to mention it would look ridiculous) I mounted one above the fireplace in my living room, I actually move the mantle down about 1' so the TV was at a more comfortable viewing level |
