I'd love for Indiana to allow standard rifle cartridges... This link if from an anti'
Should .243 cal & up rifles be allowed to hunt Whitetail Deer in Indiana? |

Hit. 56 yay 44 nay Also: I copied and pasted it in a new browser so no trackback. Basically there is no real legitimate reason any longer... When they first opened a deer season in Indiana, they elected to allow only shotguns & muzzle loaders as a conservation method... But the IDNR has since changed their management practices & use bag limits & season dates as herd management tools... Note: this is a proposal by the IDNR... So it looks favorable that it will pass |

What, the entire state is shotguns only for deer?
Around here we have some counties that are shotgun only and some that are rifles, but you can use a .223 for deer here (as long as it produces 1200 ft/lbs of energy at the muzzle). I believe population density is the determining factor. |

I believe population density is the determining factor. We can use rifles but they have to be 35cal or larger and have a max case length of 1.8 (there is also a min). This has led to rounds like a 35 wssm and 358 Hoosier being created/used so in essence there are already legal rounds out there that are fairly similar in performance to many that would be included should this pass. (which it probably will) |

Quoted: Hit. What kind of special needs person thinks .243/6mm isn't adequate for deer? |

I'm not a native but they way I understand it rifles were initially not allowed to limit the harvest, and back then they didn't have the sabots etc. that are available today so it really was more limiting. Now you have people that think it was for safety and that HPR's are so much more dangerous than what we have today (which isn't true) and you have a group that hates any kind of change because it could impact their chances to take THEIR deer.
