If you wanted to design a logo how would you go about doing it? Something you'd use as a business logo.

Think of things that the business does and incorporate it.

or

Stylize the business name or initials into what the business does.

Basic info would help.

I meant actually making it "come to life" like a software to draw it. My bad. I have the idea in my head, but need it on a screen.

Adobe Illustrator. Industry standard, and my favorite software package.

There may be others, but Illustrator is my choice.

Yup.

If you don't have Adobe, you can try Inkscape.  It's a little rough, but it's also open source.

Yes, both of these.

Vector graphics are SUPER important because otherwise if you try to print it, it's going to look like absolute shit.

Simplicity is also key. Think of all the super major brands you can recognize based on their logos. Dell, Coke, Apple, AT&T, Nike... most of them are the name of the brand in a certain font with a one- to three-color, minimalistic representative shape.

It depends on what you are using the logo for and for how long.
A few hundred bucks either buying the software and using it or, sketching it out and having a graphic artist draw it in Illustrator is cheap if it brings in the business.

Inkscape is free, and easy to use.

Scribus is also free, has a little better publishing support, but is a little more difficult to use.

Good to know. Yeah, the design is simple and relevant. I've always been fascinated by the simplicity of the logo and or marketing of the companies you mentioned.

Ugh. No. Unless you want a nice logo that looks suspiciously like something someone finds in a  Google Image Search.

Seriously: Do anything other than one of those competition sites. I am serious, for the sake of anyone who is thinking about going this route. I'm not even talking about using ME, here. I'd rather you put a contest up for some Pmags like someone else said, than go this route.

Long story short: They send your "creative brief" out to a pile of designers and they get to work. Thing is, it's a competition - they do not get paid until you pick one. So knowing they are likely not going to win due to the vagaries of personal preference, etc., they go out and do a Google image search, make a couple tweaks, and send it in. There are nightmare sites out there featuring examples of the USPS Eagle that got GIS'd and the designer just changed the color, and sent in as artwork.

You can design in photoshop just fine. Photoshop has vector tools, or if you work in raster/bitmap formats, just make sure you work at 300 dpi or higher, depending on how large you want it printed.

Now, if you outsource it to GD for pmags, thats much cheaper than hiring a full time designer... Assuming you can deal with the joke posts and aren't in a hurry.

Hire a graphic artist in your local area.  They shouldn't charge you too much for a logo design and print-ready artwork.

They shouldn't? A logo is the visual foundation of your brand; there is value to be had in a good one. If your serious about your business, you don't skimp on the logo.

Sketch up something you think you want, think of something that you really would like to plaster all over everything, and then hire someone to make a vector file for you, someone good.

You will be pleased with it, and if you aren't they will be happy to change things.

Expect to pay a fair hourly rate for their service though, it's their livelihood.

As long as you have a good idea of what you want and how you want it to look you cant really go wrong with a lot of the online services. If you go with an auction type, understand that (as stated before) you will get some people who just google clip art and copy that right into their design. If you go with an individual, group, or company thats less likely to occur.

I always encourage my clients to future-proof their businesses (and brands) as much as possible. So just because that's all you can think of for now, doesn't mean you may not be doing packaging (for example) in the future.
