How much of a role do hangovers play in regulating how much you drink ?

I used to work with a guy that used to say; Hangovers be the only thang that keep motherfuckers from going totally crazy.

I know that the older I get, the less I can drink without being hung over and the more hangovers hurt. Luckily with age comes the wisdom and self control to avoid hangovers. I type this while I am sitting at a Christmas party with free booze.

I don't believe that people should talk about hangovers.  It tends to give drinking a bad name.

Hangovers........sometimes you need to wake up and have a beer to shake the funk off.

IMO it's all about what you drink. I got shitfaced tore down a couple weekends ago and didn't wake up with a hangover. Now I did sleep for about 9 hours when I finally crashed but I woke up feeling fine. That was a Miller Lite night. Take the same kind of night with some shots on top of that and it's a totally different ballgame. No fuck that , it's a different sport all together.

I used to say, quite frequently, that the only sure fire way to handle a hangover is to never start drinking or never stop.

I had hangovers when I was younger, but now that I'm older, I don't drink like that.  I'll have wine or a couple of glasses of Jack on ice.  Have not had a hangover in I can't remember how many years.

Hydration while drinking is key.

Even after a night of REALLY tying one on, I'm perfectly fine as long as I get a solid 8 hours of shut eye and drank enough water between shots/beers/drinks/etc.

The worst I'll ever feel is "meh". Even when I ignore my own advice, it's been well over 10 years since I've been hung over enough to puke. As it stands, I'll put down a fifth of scotch or bourbon over the course of about 4-5 hours if I'm feeling frisky. Even if I mindlessly neglect to keep myself hydrated and only managed 5-6 hours of sleep, I'm still not going to be puking any time soon. I'll have a headache the next morning, but it'll be gone midday.

But get enough sleep, and remember to drink enough water? I'm good to go.

To give myself a good and proper hangover (the really miserable kind), I'd actually have to force myself to drink a shit ton more than I even want to. I'd have to make it a goal or something.

So yeah, not happening.

When I was 17: none.

Now: a lot.

I'd drink way more regularly if it weren't for hangovers. Even a couple beers will give me a bad day next day, and a bender would wreck me for a couple days. Guess I had my fun when I was younger, so I can't complain, and that's probably one reason why I handle it as poorly as I do now. I basically never drink now. The one-two beer buzz isn't worth the next day, so it's drunk or bust when I do.

I think everyone has different hangovers for different drinks.

I can drink decent rum most of the night (at a moderate pace) and wake up feeling fine. Even a few glasses of wine though I it's headache city. Beer gives me rotten guts the next day.

Regardless of the drink though, if I binge (happens every few years for various occasions) I feel like shit the next day.

I think the people that tend to get the worst hangovers are also the people that don't really care about hangovers.

The headache from a hangover comes from dehydration, plain and simple. Keep hydrated and you will never be hung over.

The 2 for 1, drink to water ratio does not help once you stop drinking. Your body, in processing the alcohol, will get rid of all the water you drank during the night. You need to continue to hydrate well after stopping drinking.

The secret I have used for many years that has kept me hangover free is before going to bed, drink about as much water as you can stand.
Every time you wake up to piss, and you will have to every couple of hours, drink another 2 or 3 full glasses of water.

When you finally get up in the morning, you will be fully hydrated and feel fine.....as long as you didn't drink enough to still feel drunk

When I was younger I drank some. Now that I`m older my wife and I will have a cocktail on the back porch a few times a month. Hangovers I`ve had in the past were self induced "at the ranch with buddies drinking all night " deals. Now a days I don`t have any time to waste feeling bad as almost every day I`m up early on the tractor, table saw or some other piece of equipment. No way I`m going to waste me time feeling like shit.

zero. I dont drink anymore. When I did the doc was usually on call with some IV's to fix you up quick.  Nothing like room service the morning after with a couple bags

If you add one glass of water for every drink you have there is no hangover!

So 4 double shots of Vodka and 8 glasses of water before bed and good to go.

So long as you don't wet the bet :)

I know this is a good idea, but the key I have found to minimizing the next day affects of too much alcohol is to eat.

But not while drinking (although I'm sure that can't hurt). If I know I will be drinking that night, I make sure to eat a good sized meal early that afternoon.

The next morning, I'll still know I had been drinking, but this method has proven to drastically reduce the more nasty affects of consuming too much alcohol.

Mixing is the only way I get hangovers.  If I stay with one beer, one decent wine, or just drink a single type of liquor I can drink unbelievable amounts with zero hang around.

I've had nights where I just drank 1 glass of that barefoot swill and only had a couple of other drinks and woke up feeling like death the next morning.

Quitting smoking has helped stop hang around as well.

Hydrate. Not sure what this hangover thing is supposed to be.

Number of drinks = number of ounces of water * 10. Then eat a banana with a little gateraid and take 2 Advil before bed.

I once drank a full 750 of vodka following that rule and ran a 5k after 8 hours of sleep. I had like 5 nalgenes of water that night.
