It's not well known, but the Continental Navy (and by association the USMC) was disbanded after the American Revolution.  Only the U.S. Army remained as part of the nation's post-Revolution military force.  The U.S. Navy wasn't raised again until 1794 and they were to combat the Barbary Pirates.  Prior to the Revolution American merchant ships flew under the British flag (or colony) and were protected by the Royal Navy.
