So my piece of shit laptop overheated and shut off. Again.  That was after some files got lost transferring to my new external hard drive.

Sooooo I may have lost my cool for a second and slammed both fist down onto it not so gently. Then it would turn on but only a black screen. I tried the take the ram out and HD out and hold the power button for a minute and it didn't work. Still a black screen even when connected to an external monitor.

Then while fiddling around with the cover off and motherboard dangling it just shut off. I think its fucked.

Does best buy sell an adapter for me to try to get the shit off the hd? Like a USB one. Assuming the drive isn't toast.

I can use my tv as a monitor and I just bought a 3TB external drive so what would be my best option for a computer that will primarily edit and render HD videos?  Should I just get a desktop tower? Build it myself?

Help!

newegg, tigerdirect, etc sell hard drive housings you can use to turn your HDD into an external drive to get the files off of.

Yes there will be an adapter, most likely SATA look for a USB3 adapter.
Just get an enclosure and use it as another backup device.

Enjoy your new computer.

A few days ago, and it wasn't even dusty.

My guess is either the heat sink paste stuff melted off or this computer is a stupid fucking asshole.

I may or may not have slapped the shit out of a computer or two in my life.

If you didn't kill the drive,  You can buy adapters and recover some of the data.

Hahaha well I'm very happy for you if you've never had a computer piss you off. This has been going on for months.

You should be able to use this $20 enclosure/adapter from Best Buy: Dynexâ„¢ - 2.5" Serial ATA Hard Drive Enclosure - Black Model: DX-HD302513.  For some reason BestBuy doesn't allow me to hotlink.

Then you should be able to access everything, just like a USB drive.

Was probably just clogged airways or a bad fan.  Co-workers laptop would boot, then shut down.  $12 for a fan and time to fix, but from your post, I don't think you have the temperment to work on a laptop.  His sister borrowed it for a while and used it in bed on top of a blanket,  the fan apparently was running full tilt until it crapped out.

SlickDeals has a lot of laptop deals.  Let someone else find a low price for you.

I usually get a new laptop every 2-3 years, and never pay more than $350-$400.

I don't even need a drive I just got a 3TB External. I don't need a monitor either. I just need a ton of ram, an i5 or i7 and a nice video card.

Mine was a Samsung lol

I wouldnt say no to a laptop that was a good deal but a desktop probably makes more sense for what I want to do.

I recommend that you get the pink one.  Pink has a calming effect on most people.

get a macbook air,  they are the best.

newegg and tigerdirect and amazon all sell a "dock" you just pop your drive into and it'll show up like a huge USB drive on your machine and you can pull your files.

SATA/IDE to USB converter $22.99

You can try this converter, does both SATA for newer drives, and IDE for older drives to USB.  Good for just transfering data to another computer.

Or you could look for a cheaper more specific converter if you search for sata or 2.5" IDE,  USB converter

Edit...found a similar or same adapter for $14.99.  Don't know what the difference is.  Cheaper one

I don't think I want a Mac.  I am thinking about just having a friend build me one because I can probably get a little more power for the same money as prebuilt.

It does, actually. It really, really, does.
