OK so I have my trust and a good bit of money set aside to get my first can!

My question is what do I get first?

I thought about starting off with a 22 can but then I look at everything else I have and think a 5.56 might be a good start!!
I will want a 45 can eventually but not to start!
what would you do.......get both is not a financial option at this point!

Depends on why you want one.

If it's just for fun, then that will depend on what level of suppression you want and what you normally shoot.

everyone should have a
30 cal can
45 can
22 can

that'll cover 95% of things you want to suppress.

I got a YHM 7.62 Ti QD, and it does everything from my .30-06 to my 223 ARs. Only regret was not filing for my 22LR can the VERY SAME DAY. A 30 cal can is a decent do-all with the exception of pistol rounds, but you want a dedicated 22lr can that can be cleaned, etc.

Here's my first can riding on my 300 BLK (rifle, waiting on my Form 1 to be approved to SBR it ):

Of course, part of the fun of shooting suppressed is doing it at night...

I started with a 5.56 can.  If I was doing it over, I'd start with a .22LR because it is the most fun and cheapest to shoot.  Everybody loves it.  After that I'd say a 7.62 can; because you can usually use them on damn near any centerfire from .300 Win Mag down, which covers a lot of ground.  They also make good 5.56 suppressors.

I started with a 556 can because a 10.5 ar is obscenely loud. Then a month later bought a 308, 45, and a 22 can. I'm currently waiting on another 556 suppressor.

I decided on the sure fire 22 Ryder as my first can, instead of the 556.  The idea is that I want it to be quiet, and the 556 when suppressed is quieter, it's still not quiet.  My next can will be a 762 or 45.

I got a .30 cal can first, but now after shooting some handguns and rimfire cans I wish I had gotten a 45 or rimfire suppressor first.

45 should be out of jail in a month.

A .22 can will sound the quietest. But a .30 can will make your loudest rifles quiet.

Imo there is more practical benefit with the second scenario.

Get a Spectre II or a Sparrow. Then get a 7.62 (saker)

I shoot my 22 can more than anything and am always looking for new hosts for it. It is great for when people that don't shoot or are afraid of guns come over, they always enjoy shooting a suppressed .22 pistol or rifle.
It is also good for family outings and gatherings, you can plink or let the kids, nieces, nephews, cousins all shoot and it doesn't bother anyone with noise and the kids aren't scared of it.

My 30 cal can on my 300AAC with subs is super quiet, but I end up shooting it super for hunting. My 30 cal on my 556 makes a difference but not a lot, still more enjoyable suppressed.

I have a 45 can coming anyday now. Be careful, they multiply.

Get a 22 can. It's cheap. If you don't like it you aren't out much $$.

Cans are hard to sell once the firm 4 is done so consider them life time purchases.

I would recommend you go the Armory / Suppressor section and begin reading there.  There are lots of threads discussing this with a lot of knowledgeable people and a lot of great info.

As mentioned already, you will need three:

-.30 cal, probably the best all around would be the Saker 762 or if you wish to spend less, the Specwar 762
- 9 or 45, if you think you might ever go 40 or 45, the 45 will cover you for all, get an Octane 45
- .22, get a Spectre II or Sparrow

after you get done with these, you will then want a dedicated 556 can.  Saker 556 or 556k or Specwar 556 or 556k.

These are all Silencerco cans, the customer service is outstanding and these are arguably the best cans you get.

You will then also want an SBR, so get an online trust and it will make your addiction much easier.  Getting one will take you down a path from which there is no return.  I went to buy my first less than a year ago, a YHM Ti 762 Phantom QD which is a very nice one, and now I have seven cans and an SBR.  Good luck!

I'm looking at getting both a 7.62 and 22LR suppressor as my first ones.

Looking at the Saker 7.62 over the 7.62 Specwar because it can take QD mounts and direct thread. Now I will have one suppressor for my 30-06 bolt gun to my 5.56 and 6.8 ARs.

Local dealer has sale on Warlock 22 suppressors right now at $199.

Cry once. I'll eventually get a 45 acp suppressor but I'd have to spend a small fortune on threaded barrels.

Get a can for the weapon you use the most.  That's what I did.
11/16/2014 11:23:04 PM EDT
[#24]
You'll get far and away more use from a .22LR can than any other can.

You can shoot a .22LR a hell of a lot more places safely and discretely than you can in any centerfire cartridge. You shoot a pistol with a can on it and everyone within a few hundred yards knows someone just shot something, you do the same thing with a centerfire rifle and people a mile or two away will know someone just shot something. In both of those cases, they may not know what was shot or if someone was hit, but they are going to be bringing real guns to find out.

You can discharge a suppressed .22 in some houses and not have people hear it.

Depends on what you shoot the most. Shoot rifle a lot? 30 cal qd can, hands down. Shoot a ton of 22? A nice user serviceable 22 can. Shoot pistol a lot? You get the idea.

I said 30 cal for rifle so you can use it on sub Calibers as well. Very versitle for a first can

I too have financial limitations. I have a 300blk that screams for a suppressor. But I would also like to suppress a .45acp 1911 and a 10/22. Is there a jack of all trades?

Start with a 22. Get a stainless unit. Don't be tempted by lower prices. I was and regret it every time I clean my pilot 2. My other 22 suppressors just are much easier to clean. The alumimum are lighter but require more hand work to clean vs dropping them in the cleaner with dip.

Some of the 45 cans are rated for 300 blackout. If it's user serviceable you can shoot 22 through it too. The can won't be as quiet as a 22 can or 30 cal can but you ears won't be bleeding from shooting it either.

get a 22lr can and a QD 30 cal can.

That will cover a lot of bases. Pistol cal cans are fun, but that's about it.

I shoot 22lr the most, followed by the 30 cal cans on ARs (w/ 7.62/556/554 bullets).

ETA do NOT get a non SS 22lr can, or one that cannot be taken apart- They suck.

If you get a can, you will keep buying more, so you might as well get 2 now.

I got them all at once. 9,45,22,556,308. If you said you can only have one it would be the 9mm. I think you can run 300blackoit subs, handguns and pistol caliber carbines. It's also the quietest can I have with the right load (excluding the 22)

Well, maybe not with a .22LR suppressor; but I was disappointed with my 5.56 suppressor.  It adds a ton of heat.  It throws off the balance.  And the rifle still sounds about as loud as an unsuppressed .22LR.  It is great for new shooters at the bench with a bipod or rest though.
