I would like to get a good jacket for winter wear.  I really don't want a thick puffy one.  Any recommendations?  Does anyone have any experience with Fjallraven?

Just wanted to recommend Arcteryx to see the arguing commence.

Depending on how cold blooded you are, I wore a Stoic insulated bombshell last winter here in Michigan. It uses Primaloft insulation, which I find to be very warm for what it is. The jacket sheds moisture very well. I bought it on sale at Backcountry.com

I have been very happy with Mountain Hardwear shells.

Also pretty happy with REI and Sierra Trading Post as places to buy.

I bought a North Face Gortex shell, used on eBay, for about $50. It's served well as my ski jacket for the last four seasons.

I look like a giant yellow and black bumblebee flying down the slopes. My skiing party can always find me.

Having spent more time than I care to getting rained on in PA in the cold, I have to say that any time I actually needed a hardshell that my old issue Gen I Goretex parka worked perfectly fine.   Anything lighter and more modern would work even better.

$500 is worth it if you spend time in the mountains in the winter. You need a jacket that keeps you warm and dry, yet lets your sweat breathe out and allows you to cool down without freezing your ass off.

If you're buying it because you need a hardshell, get a single layer jacket.   If you're looking for a low bulk wind"proof" jacket, get a multi-layer one that will let you zip a fleece liner jacket in for those extra cold days.

No, you're just an idiot. I'm in my late twenties and I still just rock the old school waffle style long underwear, then usually a fleece then a jacket and am always fine.  Don't buy the hype of all that bullshit.

I'm glad your 20" heavy barrelled RRA with NM irons is working out for you on your trips to the 100yd range.  Maybe he needs a .260 with a $3k scope because it will work better for his intended purpose.

Just a shell.  I would rather layer up.  I don't like one really thick coat.

If it is what I want, then I will pay that.  $200 to $300 is more along what I want to pay though.  I do carry a $600 + pocket knife at times, and wear a $300 watch.  So a $300 jacket is not out of the question.

Shop around for an Arcteryx Beta LT hardshell, and an Atom LT mid-layer.

You'll spend about 650 to 700 for both, but they will layer perfectly together and will allow you to use the non insulated shell as a rain jacket in warm weather. 4 seasons of usefulness, and keeps me warm down to about 15 or 20 degrees,  without sweating when it is 40 or 50 out, since they both breathe great. It will hold up for years, consider it a comfort investment.

I'd probably shop around, you can generally do better than list price on Arcteryx's website.

Fuck the haters, it's worth the money. The ones saying it isn't either haven't tried it, can't afford it, or both.

Good to 15-20 is just not quite warm enough for what I am looking for.  Highs of 3.  Maybe.  And lows down below -20 when sun is down .

AR version of the Atom jacket is a good deal warmer, especially with any form of fleece underneath. I just typically don't wear the AR one much because it doesn't get that cold here; only needed for me if I'm out hunting in the cold for extended periods, etc.
