Thinking about buying a double stack 1911 in 9mm, but I don't like buying a pistol that I couldn't rely on as a carry weapon, so how does a double stack 9mm 1911 compare in reliabilty against a single stack .45?

Also, who makes the thinnest double stack 9mm grip / frame?

What's the weight of a double stack 1911 for carry?

Maybe take a look at an FN FNX 45.

I've got a paraordnance in 40 that has been working just fine. Got it to convert to 10mm.

Double stacked 1911 in 10mm... yeah baby

Bullet shapes can make a difference, mine won't feed Tuncated flatpoint FMJ's but other shapes work well.

Otherwise it's been faultless. 21+1 Rounds

I can't figure out WHY you would want to carry a 1911 in 9mm, with a double stack magazine.

Buy a Sig, HK, almost anything else. Smaller, lighter, probably higher capacity, and MADE for the 9mm round.

Didn't say I wanted to buy it to carry it.....but I may want to carry it on a whim. Basically, I prefer not to purchase any firearm that can't be trusted for self defense, just a personal preference.

As far as 9mm, I agree that the 1911 is suited best for .45, but if I was going to compromise for a double stack magazine, I wouldn't want anything else but 9mm.....to cut down the the size of the grip. I've got small hands, so I want the grip to be as thin as possible.

I've been eyeing an STI VIP in 9mm

15+1, same envelope as a G19 (give or take), 1911 trigger...a little pricy, but it's reaaaaaaaally tempting...

For about 20 years my carry gun has been a Para P-12 in .45 ACP.  Runs flawlessly

My competition gun is an STI Eagle in .45 ACP.  Runs flawlessly

My backup competition gun is a Para P-14 in .45 ACP.  Runs flawlessly.

Skip the 9mm and buy a .45 ACP

The ATI lightweight fatboy has pretty good reviews, would be a good carry gun if you wanted to.

I wouldn't chance it. They can be reliable, but at what cost?

Single stack 1911 > double stack 1911.

I've got a P-16 Limited in .40

With upgraded followers and baseplates, I load 'em 19+1.

Absolutely the heaviest, most reliable and accurate pistol I shoot

Cool gun, but what makes a 1911 a 1911 is the straight pull trigger.  The only thing that has in common with a 1911 is that they are both SA semiautos with the safety in a similar place.

The more higher end competition models from companies like STI and SVI would be your best bet, but they are not cheap.

They are almost always some level of custom gun. The variation, even from the same smith, can be huge and not show up until after a break in period.

I'm now to the point that unless the gun is new under warranty the only way I'll buy it is I can meet at the range an put at least 300 rounds through it. Not a perfect test but better than someone else's word in an add.

Having said that, Some of the custom 2011's I have played with have been like high end custom race car compared to production guns.

lighter,

Oh my god pistols are so heavy it's unbearable.

probably higher capacity,

So, you don't actually know anything about double-stack 9mm 1911s, but you made a post about them showing your ignorance?

Yay.

19 rounds in the gun with a flush fit magazine. Which HK or SiG has more capacity than that?

and MADE for the 9mm round.

In other words, they are dainty little things made from melted down TV remotes and aluminum cookware.

As for why anyone would want a double-stack 9mm 1911:

Extremely controllable. Recoil control like a god.

An excellent trigger.

Crossover manual of arms to standard 1911s, likewise the excellent control layout of the 1911.

Shitload of bullets.

Reasons not to want a double-stack 9mm 1911:

They are a sacrilege and disrespect to the Prophet, John Mosses Browning, Brass Be Upon Him.

They are too heavy for anorexic teenage girls.

They are too big for hipster skinny jeans. Better get an NAA mini-revolver and rape-whistle.

They aren't made from recycled dildos. Thus they are not environmentally friendly.

They won't fulfill the beaten-wife desire to be smacked around and called a whore by a guy with a German accent.

They are more expensive than a Hi-Point.

My last handgun class the only guy that had a malfunction was shooting STI 9mm double stack.  Happened two days towards the end of the class and his gun was dirty.

Stick with single stack for 1911 carry.
