My job is great (The work I do. Toolmaker, large factory.) But the company has always sucked and it is getting worse. Im tired and ready to get out, but I have been here 28yrs and it is a lot to give up even though I have been stuck on back shifts and Im now anchored on midnight's and have no life. I literally have to make a date on the calendar to have any type of physical interaction with the sammich chef.

I started a thread here (Cant find it now) about a confrontation I had with a huge Haitian individual concerning him getting pissed over bullshit stories and waving a screwdriver in my face. This led to a fairly local industry partner offering me an interview. I would love to make the jump and go and work for them, but they are an hour away and no matter how I try to justify the move, all I can come up with is renting a room near there to flop in and come home every few days and weekends.

But there is an up side. This offer led me to do quite a bit of thinking about making a move, and also reminded me that my oldest brother wants to retire and has been hinting around at me taking his place at the company where he works.

So I finally went there for a looksee and all I can say is "Holy laid back atmosphere batman!" This place is really small compared to what Im used to, but they really all seem like family and everyone seems really happy.

The problem is that after 34yrs with this company my brother only makes just slightly less than me and the bennies dont look as good. I would really like to take them up on going for an interview, but Im afraid I would be lowballed on pay and would waste everyone's time.

I cant take too much of a pay cut due to needing to fix up my house and my lifestyle. Im thinking they would offer $5 to $10 per hour than what Im making and feel that with my skillset Im worth more.

There is also travel involved as my brother goes all over to re calibrate the equipment. They will be sending him to china soon, and while that would be really cool........Meh, I can always go to china if I really want.

Anyone been in this situation?

Do I chose having a life and putting off some goals or hang on and hope that someday I will get dayshift at my current job.

Im really freaking torn and would like to here what my friends here think.

Your all probably thing "Holy poopthread, RBW made a serious post!" But Im not actually a ruthard, I just play one on the innernets.

Whatcha think?

Won't cost you anything to talk with them.

A 1 hour commute is not really that far/long.  There are plenty of people who have a much longer drive.

I wouldn't stay anywhere I had large Haitians waving screwdrivers in my face.

An hour away doesn't seem THAT far. I know people who drive that 5 days a week.

Doesn't seem like it'd hurt to talk with your brother's company.  They might appreciate your family's loyalty & reliability.

We have 2 carpenters who do 2.5 every damn day. I wouldn't want to do it, but the pay is over twice in St. Paul versus whatever tiny town they are from.

There are tons of people who have longer commutes. You won't know the pay unless you go have an interview. I think a couple dollars less an hour is worth it for having a better schedule.  In my opinion.

A guy at work makes an hour and a half trip each way 7 days a week. As long as you have a fuel efficient-ish vehicle, it's not a problem.

I would ask your current employer for a raise since you've put 28 years into the company.

Travel is nice. Mandatory travel, is not. Seeing new country is nice, but having to wait around at airports, grabbing connecting flights, dealing with shit seats, shit people, and shit eating rump rangers at the TSA points.

Less pay, more flights, more headache, more $$ in fuel, wear, tear, and depreciation on the vehicle, and more drive time. NO THANKS.

Commute isn't a problem. However, you need to analyze the total costs of all positions vs salary and benefits. Can you deal with crazy Haiti guy shanking you while you work a mill? If not, that's a cost of working at your current job. Having to commute is the other.

Sure, 1 hour is not too bad of a drive.

Right now I commute 20min to work and gas is not cheap. Im not sure how much more I would spend per week on gas, but considering my commute is now mostly highway and the 1 hour commute would either be on the turnpike (tolls) or back roads where I will get poor mileage.

A little beater econobox is an option, but to make that work financially I would then be driving something unreliable and uncomfortable. I had been carpooling with a coworker who has a small honda and that thing had me claustrophobic any where near a truck.

Adding to the mix, my brothers place is on my way to work and only about 10mi from my house. Plus it is a kind of come and go as you please as long as you put in your 8hrs.

^This X 1,000.  I currently drive an hour each way and took a pay cut to get here.  You can't pay me enough to be in a miserable job.  Did it for two years and won't go back.

Believe it or not, I have been through worse there, and Big Haiti is now an ally.

Its messed up what kind of things you can get used to when dealing with them over a long period of time. It wasn't always like this, but more of a gentle decline over the years as our last contract only gave new hires $9 to start and caps them after 3yrs to $13.75, so we really dont attract good people anymore.

28yrs ago I started at $9.05 going to full benefits after 6 months. Pension after 5yrs + an extra week of vacation + a 401k. I now have 5 weeks vacation, a week of sick time and an air conditioned shop.

Have you ever thought about going back to school? Learning programming or something? Those jobs are in demand.

Not to be a dick, but you have a lot of excuses to not leave your current job. I can understand it, leaving what you know behind for something mostly unknown is a scary prospect. Especially when it's your livelihood.
At least go and see what they offer. You can always say no.
