Exactly. My cat of 22 years, Behemoth, died Sunday afternoon. I've had her since I started graduate school, when I got her and her brother as kittens.
She was a remarkably healthy cat (for her age), and seemed perfectly fine Friday - going up and down the stairs with no problems, jumping up on the bed, begging for bacon, etc. Sure, she was mostly deaf, and her eyesight wasn't what it once was, but she hadn't had any medical problems in the last 10 years. But she started having problems and acting weird Saturday, and when it didn't get better I took her to an emergency animal hospital early Sunday morning ... and unfortunately by Sunday afternoon the doctor felt that putting her to sleep was probably the best option, simply because she was so old and pretty frail, and my wife and I had already decided that we didn't want to be super-aggressive trying to keep a 22-year old cat alive. It was very sad.
So, I'm putting her in my avatar for a day or two, just like I did for her litter-mate and brother (Leviathan), when he died almost 10 years ago. Then I'll go back to my regular avatar. I've posted this hilarious picture of her before, sleeping on my keyboard:
