My wife's sister lives in southeast Texas and feeds her hummingbirds.  The wife took a few pictures yesterday.  She said there appeared to be almost 100 humming birds in the trees in her yard and area.

Do you guys have them this time of the year?

wow, that's awesome

I've only seen a few here in Ohio this year

Do I see a Box of Truth video on what round for a hummingbird in the future?

I've seen two this year. I honestly thought one was a huge wasp at first. Pretty amazing stuff.

That's awesome!

I have a feeder on my patio and have a regular group of about 5-6 that frequent it.  I have one that sits on the tree nearby, and every time one comes in to feed he dive bombs them and runs em off.

A few times i've been standing there and he comes in and hovers 1 foot from my face, it's nuts.

When I put out a feeder, I'll get 3 or 4.

Then one bear.
Fuckers love that nectar stuff.

We have watched little male hummingbirds that will "guard" a feeder and run off any others that try to eat at it.  They are so busy that they don't even eat from it themselves.

I've read that these birds can fly so quickly that we appear to be moving in slow motion to them and that is why they show almost no fear of us.

100 would make a good mess of mini-bird meat.

There's a few still hanging around here. I figured they'd have gone South by now. They have been hitting the feeder more often lately, though.

I was at an acquaintance's house a few weeks back and she has a bunch of feeders out.  When the bird density gets high it's interesting to hear them fight/squabble.  Every minute or so one would zip by me only a few feet away.  He was coming right at me!  I actually had more of them than usual in my garden this year.

I saw one get snatched in mid air by a crow. Hummingbird was flying along minding its own business and the Crow was above it by abt 20 feet and dive bombed it and then the hummingbird disappeared.

Wish we had that many. We only have 3 or 4 different birds around here.

Placeholder for hummingbird pics.

We only saw 1 or two this year.  Last year we had a few regulars that would come around.  We're planning on putting in some more plants in that will attract them.  I wish I could get as many as in OP's pics.

I have 3 Hummingbird feeders. They are really neat little birds. They are like the fighter pilots of the bird world. The way they fight each other, and buzz each other is amazing.
When I change the feeders, they just buzz around me till I'm done. Then back to feeding , fighting, and guarding the feeder.
Here Coons like the nectar. But there is an old Farmer remedy to get rid of them, that is deadly.

You must have a very fast camera to freeze their wings. My cheapo won't do it, but the Nikon isn't too bad.
Nice pictures Old_Painless !!

She took the pics.

And thanks.

Just a few of what we call the locals left.

We have had 2 here at the house all summer. Over at the Natural Center in the NF they have 100's at theirs. Neat to watch and listen to their chirps.

I see them around the house, but never that many at once.   I keep saying that i need to put a feeder up, but i keep forgetting to order one.

Think I'll head on over to amazon

I'm so jealous!  One flitted around on our new deck yesterday and I told Wes we need to put some feeders back there.

I'll park myself out there with my camera all day.

Their metabolism is so high, they don't sleep at night, they hibernate like bears. Every night.

I see them around here from time to time.

Recently saw these things. For a moment I thought they were hummingbirds. Nope!

Nice Pics, thanks Mrs. O-P!
Farm where I used to keep my horses sometimes had nearly that many around the feeders.
The sound was 'Amazing.'

I can't imagine , HOW MUCH sugar they must go through.

We don't have near that kind of numbers, wife buys 5# of sugar per week just for the birds, grand kids love to watch them as well.

[#27]
We have a few that hang out here...fun to watch them "fight" over the feeder.

About two weeks ago here in MS it was similar to that. I had two feeders going and it was a madhouse of hummingbirds. I quit filling the feeders up after they were emptying both out in less than a day. Then we got a cool wether weekend and that really cut down on the birds. Filling them back up again and down to about a half dozen.

We've got two females still hangin around in central VA.  The males split about 2 weeks ago.

Love those little guys!

We will have 20 or 30 of them buzzing around our two feeders in the back yard. We have one humming bird that thinks he owns one of the feeders and he will run the other ones off of it.

I am glad those little bastards are tiny.

Could you imagine the terror they would create if they had 3' wing spans?

You could not leave the house with a shotty

How many to make a meal?

Kidding, great shots.

Our hummingbirds are all winging their way back to Mexico for the winter. I suppose some of the birds you see in Texas could be the same bunch making their way South, it's the right time of the year

edit Ok I looked that up before I posted it

We get them, but rarely that many in IL.

The ones that come for the summer are too territorial to share, and the ones migrating back to Mexico are just passing through for a couple days.  If you blink, you'll miss them.

I would always get some in my yard in St. Louis - I planted lots of butterfly bushes, and hummingbirds apparently like those.  But I've never seen a crowd like that.  Very cool, and very nice photos!

We've averaged 3-4 "regulars" over the summer months.
Must be a bunch of them headed South, as over the past week, there have been close to 20 at our feeders.
You can stand right next to the feeder, and if you stand still, they seem to ignore you.

We've got those moths out here in So CO.

We have a couple year round but in September, the migration is on. They're here now fueling up for the trip to Mexico. When we get a good cold front, they'll wing it on south. Until then, they are feeding like crazy. We have 30+ on our feeders at any given time right now.

I'll see if I can get some pic's to post up.

Can you imagine how much sugar these guys would burn up flying all the way to South America?

Those little wings will beat a bazillion times.

Truly amazing.

In Seattle, many of our hummingbirds stay all year round. I've watched them for years. Just the other day, I finally heard on chirping. Interesting sound.

Our's chatter constantly. Maybe its because there are so many. This is a crappy pic from a couple years ago but is representative of what is happening right now. We've had them so thick at times that every hole on the feeders is engaged and there are more buzzing around waiting for a slot to open up.

Ever since I was a kid in elementary school and I saw a hummingbird for the first time, in a animal picture book type thing. The Humming bird has always been my favorite non-bird of prey.

I rarely get to see them in real life, but I definitely enjoy seeing them. I get lucky to see them even just once a year. I'd buy a feeder but there are cats around.

They mostly have left from here in Northern Montana, but they will be back in April. They usually buzz the windows where we hang our feeders to let us know when it's time to hang them back up.

Most have left now. We had a dozen or so around here all summer.

A friend takes it serious. He had lots of feeders and dozens of birds around his place. He told me he went through 100lbs of sugar this summer.
