Pro tip: When assembling a short block on a stand, do not slip when you are installing the last nut on the last rod bearing cap and drop it deep within the block.
You may be forced to undo all of the work you did, down to pulling pistons, crank and cam to get it from it's hiding place between the cam and lifters. That is all. |

Couldn't see where it ended up. Heard it clatter once when I flipped the stand and then it got caught between a lifter and the cam and wouldn't make any noise.
Found it once I got the crank out but couldn't get it out for fear of damaging a lifter/came lobe (it was pretty stuck, probably from flipping the block twice) |

Have you ever used one? They have small polls, so the sideways pull is minimal. When something crosses the polls on the end, then it's really stuck. Or you can use the grabber style with the push button and fingers that slide out of the tube. |

washers or nuts down intake runners.....I was tuning a Chrysler v-6 minivan once..and the #1 plug is extremely difficult to get to..and you end up doing it by feel. Well, a stray nut from somewhere dropped perfectly into the plug hole....unbeknownst to me ..got the plug in, buttoned every thing up...fired it up...and promptly put a zillion pieces of piston into the oil pan |

I found a Toyota radiator cap deep in the bowels of my engine compartment. Have owned the truck for 10 years and never lost one. It has been riding around under there for over a decade somehow. Wasn't wedged in either. Had to disassemble a newly built VW engine because I couldn't remember if I had pulled the rags out of the intake ports on the heads. I had. Not too hard to do but just one of those "fuuuuuuuuuu" moments. |

Dropping a valve spring retainer down the spark plug hole and then trying to fish it out with a magnet was always fun, too. |

Those old steel crank 292 truck motors were a wonderful thing to find when you wanted to build something larger than a 302 Windsor without using a 351W block. Have the crank machined down to fit the Windsor block, add the right parts like small block Chevy pistons on small block Chrysler rods and start building a fun little engine. |
