I have a turtle, that I have had for 16 years now.  We got him out of a lake in Wisconsin(a friend at the time's parents had a lake house) and took him home, bought an aquarium, bought some turtle pellets, read up on the care of turtles, and he's now survived three moves, outlived every other pet we've had since then, but we have no clue how old he is.

I called the local reptile supply house last year after I bought a new aquarium lid for him there, and asked if they knew of any turtle vets or any way of finding out his age, and they said no.

So I turn to the all mighty GD.

Slimer.

Originally we named him Newton, because, we had gotten him the week we went to see Wayne Newton, but Slimer was a better name, cause he's kind of, slimy.

If you can take a real clear and up close pic of the underside of the turtle I might be able to sex and age the turtle, but, it will need to be clear.

Admittedly it hasn't been cleaned in a week or so but he does live in clean water, and I change the filter often.  I'll give the tank a good wipe down on my lunch break.

Don't turn him completely upside down. Just hold him upright and take a pick of the underside.

I've read that you can get a very rough estimate by counting number of ridges on the shell (like a tree).

I've had snapping turtles that were in excess of 50 years old.

He looks miserable being caged up like that.  While you're at it, contact a turtle psychiatrist to see if he suffers from depression.  There are quite a few new turtle-specific anti depressants that are on the market that may help out.

Looks more like what they call a rather common "Painted Turtle" here.
They are everywhere.
Wisconsin is full of them.
