The NYPD is set to equip 50 officers with body cameras as part of a pilot program testing the technology, police sources said Thursday.
Police Commissioner Bill Bratton is expected to make the announcement Thursday afternoon that the cops in five different precincts will soon be wearing the recording devices, the sources said. It wasn’t immediately clear what interactions with the public will be recorded and how long the pilot program will last. But civil libertarians have privacy concerns.
“Body cameras ought to be a win-win for both the police and the communities they serve as long as their use is limited to police interactions and addressing complaints of abuse or wrongdoing,” said Donna Lieberman, executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union. “But we also have concerns about mission creep and privacy. The NYPD has a long history of engaging in surveillance of innocent New Yorkers, and body cameras can’t become yet another tool for massive police surveillance." |

You can't have it just your way. If yutes want to stick a camera into every interaction with the cops and then just post the last 30 seconds of getting their asses kicked, the cops can stick a camera right back at them and show how life choices matter. |

Quoted: If I were a police officer I'd buy my own camera just to document the lies suspects would tell about me. Some officers on here have already done so, from what they've said in other threads. One Chief Deputy has reported that they're evaluating cameras for issue, but a number of their officers have already purchased their own. One problem is reliability, he also reports that only about 20% of their dash cams are currently functional, the companies selling them aren't that great at support... |

If NYPD was smart, they'd issue cameras to the most active guys. Kicking ass is sometimes a part of the job. Showing it from your perspective isn't a bad thing. Then again, having read about NYPD's frequent lack of common sense from Extorris' posts, I wouldn't be surprised if the 50 cameras first go to station clerks and property techs.

As usual the activists and libtards can't decide what they want here. They want cameras so they can catch the police doing what they think we do all day long such as racism, bias, beatings, discrimination, harassment and murder. On the other hand they don't want the cameras to catch the criminals committing crimes and inciting police responses to their violent actions. They want selective camera use, as long as it shows the police as thugs, and criminals as victims of police thugs.

POLICE STATE! Right? |

Great idea.
Departments that have officers wear body cams have seen a dramatic reduction in complaints from the public: 1) officers are more likely to behave better if they are taped 2) BS complaints from the public are reduced greatly when they can be easily disproven. Every cop should wear one in my opinion. |

Every cop should wear one in my opinion. If there are no consequences for making a false complaint then it won't do shit to stop them. People make false complaints in NYC because they know even ones proven to be false go in the officer's record and are held against the officer. They are told that by the people at the CCRB who take the complaint. |

Put a body camera on me back in the day, you'd get 7 1/2 hours of footage of the dashboard of the car, interrupted by 1 hour of foosball in the lounge. |

Not going to be checking out yoga pants wearing hardbodies at Starbucks that the cam records and sharing the pics? Kind of hard to believe. |

I'd say an even bigger problem is the extremely narrow field of view. The only thing worse than no footage is incomplete footage. But, piss on libertarians and their privacy concerns. They were the ones who wanted us to wear cameras. Now we get to record every sordid incident of our jobs, and its all on public record now. |
