The ones on my Xterra pop out just by tugging on them.
The vent parts get washed in the sink and I can run a brush into the duct work.
Still I likely have ten pounds of Mojave Road and Bradshaw Trail dust in the thing.

Simple green and Qtips?
A small detailing brush will work in a pinch.
I used to have to detail cars for Avis car sales when I was a kid.
Thats what we did to clean up the vents.
I do it in my truck once every few years (live in seattle, what dust).

Q Tips work well for the louvers. Dampen them with a cleaning solution or protectant.
